Welcome Back 2021-2022

A Note from Mr. Muniz

I would like to thank the teachers, staff, parents, and most importantly the TJE students for a successful start of the school year. With the support of you, the parents, we continue to excel as a school in academics on a national level. I ask that you check nightly to make sure your child is doing their homework. I also challenge you as the parent to ask your child each day about school and what he/she is learning. Together we will succeed. Remember the most important thing is a child's education. TJE is the place to be!

Virtual Parent Night

TJE will be hosting a virtual parent night. This will include a short introduction video from your child's teacher. Grade level curriculum and classroom expectations will also be outlined. Look for more information and instructions from your child's teacher on August 26th on how to access this information.

Ready Set Kindergarten

Enrollment for Ready, Set, Kindergarten is currently taking place. RSK is a free kindergarten readiness class held once a week inside the elementary schools.

RSK will be at TJE on Tuesday afternoons from 12 pm to 2 pm, beginning September 21st.

Email rskclassroom@gmail.com for more information and to enroll your child.

Meet Our New Staff

Join us in welcoming our new staff members to the TJE Family:

Miss Lucille Newton ~ Title 1 Teacher

Mrs. Patti Simms ~ Special Education

Mrs. Alicia Vara ~ Media Center

Mrs. Wendy McAlpine ~ ELL Aide

Mrs. Julie Wilson ~ Utility Aide

Mrs. Kristin Miller ~ Instructional Aide

Miss Miranda Carver ~ Head Custodian

Mr. Terry Lister ~ PM Custodian

School Hours

Our school day is 8:45 am - 3:15 pm, Monday through Friday.

If your child needs breakfast, they may enter the school at 8:20 am. The doors open for all students at 8:30 am. We encourage all students to arrive in time to prepare for the school day and be in their seats, ready to learn when the bell rings at 8:45 am. If your child walks to school, we ask that they not arrive until 8:20 am. If you are dropping your child off for breakfast, please do not leave your child by Door L until a staff member is present and allowing children to enter the building. We do not want children left unattended. If your child is not eating breakfast, please do not have them arrive prior to 8:30 am. Our goal is to keep everyone safe, healthy and socially distanced.

Arrival & Dismissal

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up is at Door L. We ask that parents not line up for dismissal until 3 pm. Middle school releases at 2:50 pm. Lining up prior to 3 pm creates a situation where middle school buses and traffic are blocked by the TJE pick up line that often extends onto Roosevelt.

Please follow the traffic flow map if you are picking up your child. We do utilize the basketball court area inside the gates to help with the number of cars entering the lot for parent pick up.

If your child has a change in dismissal, please remember to send a note in with your child. If you need to change dismissal after the start of school, please call the office prior to Noon to arrange for the dismissal change. Receiving phone calls right before dismissal makes it extremely difficult for us to make these quick changes. It takes time to notify the teacher and the student. We want to ensure your child is in the proper location when we begin dismissal.

Buses usually leave TJE by 3:30 pm each day. We appreciate everyone's patience as bus drivers adjust to their new students and new routes. Please do not park in the bus parking area located on Roosevelt in front of the school.

Specials

Your child will have ART and STEM once per week for one hour and P.E. and Music two times a week for 30 minutes each. Your child's teacher will share the specials schedule with you. Please remember your child will need gym shoes on P.E. days.

Water Bottles

Please send a refillable water bottle to school each day with your child. Water is available through refillable water station in the hallways. Please label your child's water bottle.

Return to Learn

We continue to take COVID seriously. Frequent hand washing/sanitizing will remain a priority. Physical distancing is being encouraged when possible. Masks are optional, unless directed by state or local officials. However, masks are REQUIRED if your child is a bus rider.

Please refer to the Return to Learn Plan for all COVID procedures in place for the 2021-22 school year. https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRKAxzGHryej-EclitkfIzvvyML23-L5GIP45btuwIRDk6grULlPZpRtaePIw6lLfUDst14DD627VUN/pub

Notes from Our Nurse (Mrs. Caldwell)

If your child will not be in attendance, please call the school office by 9:30 am.

Any child that needs medication at school needs to have physician orders dated for 2021-22. A parent needs to bring the medication into the nurse's office. Over the counter medications also need to be brought in by a parent and physicians orders must be on file. Please do not send medication in with your child.

If your child has a medical appointment, please send a doctors note in with your child or have the office fax the note to the school office.

Please refer to the VCS Health & Wellness link for any health related information. You may also call, dojo, or email Mrs. Caldwell with any questions. Scaldwell@valpo.k12.in.us

NOTES FROM Our SOCIAL WORKER (Mrs. Noonan)

During the 2021-2022 school year, the VCS Social Services Team is able to assist in providing food for students in need over the weekend. This program is made possible thanks to our funded partnership with United Way as well as many other generous community donors! Food item bags will be given to students on the last school day of each week to sustain the student through the weekend. Students who previously participated in the Backpacks & Snacks Program must be signed up again in order to receive food bags for this school year.

The first Backpacks & Snacks distribution for this year will be on Friday, September 3, 2021. In order to be included in the first distribution, please register your student by Thursday, August 26, 2021. Please remember to register each child individually. Click this link to sign up.

Notes from the Cafeteria

Once again, free meals are available to all students for the 2021-22 school year. This includes breakfast & lunch, thanks to the passage of the American Recovery Plan. If your child purchases milk separately, there is a charge of $0.55. You may deposit money into your child's school lunch account online for free, without fees.

Menus are available on the My School Menus App. This app is the easiest way to see what is being served in our cafeteria each day.
