Ethnocentrism
The perception that one's own culture is superior to others
Americans may be most ethnocentric of all people- (Matsumoto & Juang, 2013, p.260)
This cartoon exemplifies the attitude of some Americans towards other cultures and by association, other languages.
"Our ignorance of languages other than English...may be our downfall" (Matsumoto & Juang, 2013, p.260)
Language is the way that we communicate with one another. If we are unable to speak or understand other languages it is likely that we will also know little about the culture behind those languages putting us at a disadvantage in the age of globalization.
Education
Educating ourselves on the importance of other languages and cultures is imperative in order for us to successfully become a part of the global community.
