LANGUAGE ARTS
We are on our sixth and last Red Reader! We are working on building our reading skills and fluency. Please keep reading at home daily over the summer! Building appropriate phrasing is an important skill that is best learned through practice.
Pronouns have been keeping us busy! Next we'll move on to adverbs that tell how an action takes place.
We have been learning about prefixes such as "re" and "un" and how to add them to a root word. We will be learning about different types of syllables ; those that are open, closed or have a stable syllable.
In Writing, we will focus on writing a Personal Narrative . We encourage students to use correct capitalization and ending punctuation and to develop their writing skills by using interesting word choices.
MATH
We have completed our Measurement Unit and have learned to compare lengths of different objects using standard and non standard units.
Our next Unit is Data Analysis. First Graders will create their own surveys and collect, sort, and organize data in up to three categories using models/representations such as tally marks or T-charts.
They will then create bar graphs and pictographs to represent the data. This is a student driven learning experience with students drawing conclusions and generating and answering questions . This is always an interesting activity for students!
Our last Unit of the year will be Personal Financial Literacy. We will learn about Needs and Wants, and saving and spending money wisely. First Graders will explore solving problems involving spending, saving money, and charitable giving.
SCIENCE
First Graders just finished up our Habitats Unit. It was great to see their creativity while making a habitat for an animal. It was also wonderful to see them present their habitat and tell about the climate, food, water, and shelter. Some of them could even tell who their animal's predators were. Way to go first graders!
Now we are learning all about plants! Why are plants important, and what life would be like without plants are some of our Guiding questions. We will study the parts of a plant, and how they grow. First Graders are also understanding why pollination is important, and how different pollination systems work. They will get to work with real plants for a hands on approach.
Students will then use the Engineering Design Process to design their own hand pollinator!
