San Francisco, California

General Information

Why It's Protected

Yosemite is protected by UNESCO because of it’s waterfalls, mountain peaks and beautiful scenery. Also for the half dome and what a glacier did to it. The snow patted down and turned into ice then more snow came down and the ice torn the garnet walls up and the wall collapsed making the half dome. That is an example of why this is a natural WHS. El Capitan is one of the rock formations in Yosemite. From the base to the along its tallest face the beautiful rock formation called El Capitan extends about 3,000 feet. Yosemite was put on the WHS list in 1984. Most of the peaks in Yosemite range about 10,000 feet high (3,050 meters).

History

Ahwahneechee Indians were living on the land we now know of Yosemite National Park. The first white men entered Yosemite property to find the Ahwahneechee Indians to kick them out of their homeland. When the moment the doctor Lafayette Bunnell saw the land he was amazed by its beauty and named “Yosemite.” After that in 1855, another group of white men led by James Mason Hutchings entered the valley of Yosemite. Hutchings wanted some cash to make a fortune so he built a tourist hotel. Eight years later James brought a photographer to Yosemite to quickly spread around for tourism.
