Our Daily Routine
ESL class consists of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities. Vocabulary instruction is an essential part of our daily lessons. Afterwards, a lesson is taught which integrates reading, writing, speaking and listening and connects to content that they will be learning about in their homeroom classrooms. I plan my lessons to give the students background knowledge or to make classroom concepts easier for the students to understand.
Learning and Progress Reports
Throughout the fall, students learned reading strategies that would help them to read fiction and non-fiction books in English. They learned about things to look for in non-fiction books that can help them understand what they are reading. Next, we learned about story elements (plot, character, setting, narrator, etc.) and worked on comprehension strategies. We have just completed a unit about government which will tie in with what the students are learning in their classrooms. This unit discusses why we have governments, types of governments and how governments interact with each other.
Progress reports for ESL will be sent home Friday, December 14th. Look for these to check on your child's progress in ESL!
What can I do to help my child progress?
Have your child use Raz-Kids on a regular basis
On Raz-Kids, students listen to and read books and then take quizzes to check their comprehension. Doing these activities will help all of their English skills become stronger.
Encourage your child to read
Reading in English can always help students grow. Encourage your child to read in their home language as well to foster a love for reading.
Encourage your child to listen to English
Listening can help improve English skills. Listening to stories on Raz-Kids, listening to TV or others speaking English can help your child's English improve.
