*REMINDER* ~ PTO Meeting TONIGHT, 2/28 ~ 7PM, Library
Leverty Letter
Student engagement directly contributes to academic success, so the question to ask is, “How engaged are Montclair students?” Allow me to answer that question by sharing this story. Over the past several months Mrs. Sullivan and I have been putting together a video showcasing the many ways your generous contributions are put to use at Montclair. In order to infuse some humor into what could be a dry video, I decided to dress up like Where’s Waldo for each photo. Now, you would think that when someone in costume, let alone your principal, comes into the classroom to take part in your lesson, students might take notice. In our initial photo opportunity, we took a picture of me indulging in an Art Literacy lesson with the students, which by nature is a very engaging activity, so we thought that their reaction was situational. Time and time again, classroom to classroom….Nothing! There was absolutely no reaction to a large Where’s Waldo sitting and reading a book on the carpet, rolling around on mats in the gym, plugging away at scratch code in the tech lab. Students did not miss a beat with their task at hand, not even to stop and wonder why I was there. Now either one of two things are in play here: students are so used to me walking around in a Where’s Waldo costume that it didn’t even occur to them that something was amiss; OR students at Montclair are so focused on their work that they didn’t notice my interloping presence. Either way, the outcome proves that students at Montclair are extremely engaged in their studies.
P.S. My thanks and appreciation to the PTO, the Auction Committee (Courtney Cronk, Tracy Meurisse, Jake Shores) and all of the families that contributed to this years’ auction.
Hawk on!

"Hawk-tion" Wrap-up
The 2018 Montclair auction was a smashing success! I say that as a member of the committee that planned the event, and let’s just say we are very proud of the outcome. Sometimes you work tirelessly on something and the outcome is kind of meh! or you don’t actually get to enjoy the event because you’re putting out fires the whole time. But this year’s auction was truly awesome: I don’t know of anyone who didn’t have a great time, including everyone who made it happen!
Some highlights:
- The Zoo was a great venue! If you arrived in the first 45 minutes or so, you got to meet Sundance the Red Tailed Hawk! How cool was that?!! There was plenty of room to see all the classroom art, the sensational sign-ups, and the silent auction items. The dinner was great and wine on every table was a nice touch.
- We hired auctioneer, Brian Bice, who brought state Senator Mark Hass as emcee as well as his posse of spotters. They brought an element of professionalism to the event and helped us to raise more money than we would have otherwise. Brian had some great tricks up his sleeve that added to the fun and excitement, like the tray of drinks that Lauren Dahl delivered that was purchased for the teachers, for example.
- Joseph Forbish was an amazing addition to our team this year. Among many other things, he created a video just before the paddle raise that brought a tear to your eye. If you missed it, here’s the link: https://vimeo.com/257620604/ea6be145ef
- We had a team of volunteers from Hayhurst and Raleigh Hills schools who did a bang-up job of checking people in, checking people out (thank goodness for new software this year that made things run so swiftly and smoothly), selling balloons, golden tickets, and the 50/50 raffle (heads or tails) bracelets.
- Heather Shores was our procurement queen. Thank you, Heather, for all the emails, phone calls, drop-ins, etc. that you spent so much time and energy on to make the auction items so fantastic.
- Many people dressed in their finest animal print attire, which made for a fun and festive occasion!
- And last, but not least, we raised approximately $30,000 for our PTO! That’s $5k beyond our goal! We still have sensational sign-ups to sell, and some of the art will be available for purchase as prints in the near future, so that amount will grow.
We’d like to thank our sponsors: Lauren Dahl at Living Room Realty for covering the new auction software; Misty Haqq and Simple Floors for helping to cover the venue’s “auction package”; Joseph Forbish and Joseph Forbish Photography for all printed materials, design work, slide show, and video, etc.; Sean and Tracy Meurisse and The Little Gym for their monetary gift; Jeremy Turner and Porshe Murphy for their awesome Ancestry Brewing beer donation; and Jim and Dana Atwood for their generous wine donation.
Thank you to everyone who attended for supporting Montclair Elementary School!
With gratitude,
~Courtney Cronk, Tracy Meurisse, and Jake Shores
