CenturyLink grant announcement

CenturyLink announced the North Carolina winners of the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation's Teachers and Technology grant program. The program awards educators grants up to $5000 for technology innovation in their classrooms.

Parkwood Elementary School was awarded $1,500 to purchase six Go Pro Hero HD cameras, six head strap quick clips, six tripod mounts and 30 headphones for project, "A Day in the Life of a Fifth Grader". The new technology will allow students to create troubleshooting videos of how to properly use the technology as well as instructional videos of how to master specific curriculum standards essentially being able to take the teacher home and have constant access to academic support. Teacher Brenda Hensley submitted the project.

Swansboro Middle School was awarded $5,000 to purchase four drones and an iPad for project, "Critical Thinking Takes Flight". Three drones will serve as coding drones to help promote computer programming skills along with collaborative and problem solving skills. The fourth drone will be used as a tool for project based learning. Teacher Kelly Mitchell submitted the project.

Classrooms Without Walls - OCLC

If you didn't get a chance to get out to the Onslow County Learning Center today to see their Classrooms Without Walls event, no worries - you will have a chance again next Friday, May 20th - 9:30 - 12:00.

This worthwhile experience showcases the good work happening at the Onslow County Learning Center under the direction of Felecia Walton. You will not want to miss this opportunity and we hope you can stop by and see this learning in action event.

Classroom Without Walls puts the leaning into the hands of our students as they proudly lead you around their campus and showcase what learning looks like with fun and engaging activity stations for all to enjoy.

BOE Workshop - May 26th 9:00 am

Please join us for a Board of Education Workshop on May 26th at 9:00 am in the Family Education Center. The agenda will include a legislative update and a financial overview.

The hearing panel scheduled for that day has been cancelled.

High School Senior Job Fair

Onslow County Schools will host its first-ever High School Senior Job Fair, Tuesday, May 17th at the American Legion Building, 3:00 - 5:00 pm.

The job fair will help seniors who are planning on remaining in Onslow post-secondary with guidance on enrolling at Coastal Carolina Community College or Miller-Monte, and/or entering the local workforce. Community support for the fair has been overwhelming with over 35 businesses scheduled to be in attendance.

In preparation for the event, Onslow students have been attending workshops on creating resumes, interviewing skills, dressing for success, and honing in on their "30 second elevator pitch".

STEM Center Grand Opening - JCM

Please join us for a grand opening ceremony for the Duke Foundation STEM Center at Jacksonville Commons Middle School on Friday, May 20th at 9:00am.

The STEM Center was made possible through a Duke Energy grant received by the STEM East network. With the grant funding, STEM East is establishing STEM centers in middle schools across six eastern North Carolina counties - Carteret, Craven, Greene, Lenoir, Onslow, and Wilson.

We hope you can join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony and brief tour of the Center.
