Library Receives Significant Donation of Music Scores, Books and CDs
By Jenna Barry
Earlier this year, an announcement was published in the Weekly Bulletin about the Library and the Music Department receiving a generous donation of music items from the estate of Susan Kalman. Over the summer, the Library’s Technical Services staff and the Music Department’s Andrew Ardizzoia and John Tuohy worked hard to document and process over 500 new items, including books, music scores, and CDs, to be added to the collection. In the area of print books, the donation included titles on music theory and history, and dozens of biographical works of composers. There is particularly thorough coverage of the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. A vast array of scores of classical works, including many for piano and strings, will also become a part of the Library’s circulating collection. Additionally, the extensive CD collection will be an invaluable resource for members of the Library community who wish to hear performances of classical works for study or enjoyment.
Look for an announcement soon about an event to showcase these very special items!

Statewide Library Catalog and Interlibrary Loan Update
Last Spring, the Connecticut State Library announced that the Statewide Library Catalog and databases, along with the Interlibrary Loan system, would be temporarily shut down, to be replaced this fall by a new system. This decision was made as a result of ongoing budgetary reductions.
We have recently received an update from the CT State Library: due to unexpected delays in receiving needed funding approvals, the new Statewide Library Catalog’s early September roll-out will be pushed back to mid-October. The State Library was notified in August that the Governor had approved the needed capital equipment funds, and the paperwork to purchase the new servers and other IT equipment is now moving forward.
We apologize for the unavoidable inconvenience caused by the State Library’s budgetary decision. Questions regarding ILL and statewide catalog searching statewide should be directed to the library staff in Reference and Circulation.
Meanwhile, thank you for your patience as we await the implementation of the new system, and return to delivering improved searching and ILL services.
How to Search the DSM V Online
Searching the Library's subscription to the DSM V online can be a daunting task. The electronic version is linked to many other American Psychiatric Press resources. It can link to textbooks on psychiatry, books on cognitive behavioral and similar types of resources. This brief tutorial will focus in on how to limit your search results to the DSM V.

NVCC Faculty & Staff “Vacation Book Group”
Our recurring “Vacation Book Group” – open to all NVCC Faculty, Staff and friends - met in June to discuss Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng. A prize-winning debut novel examining themes of assimilation in a mixed-race family, it was a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2014, and was named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, Booklist, Entertainment Weekly and many others.
If you are intrigued by the idea of joining colleagues informally during semester breaks and vacations to discuss interesting books that have some meat to them (while veering away from overly weighty tomes!), contact Elaine Milnor at the library, or keep an eye out for emails about upcoming discussions.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
This year I tackled the 784 page, 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning tome from Donna Tartt: The Goldfinch. My read was not without its rewards, and I enjoyed the topsy turvy adventures of its characters. But I could have lopped off a few hundred pages with no harm done (apologies to Ms. Tartt). This is a book you can really sink your teeth into!
