Understanding your Generation Z Child

Generation Z (aka Gen Z, iGen, or centennials), refers to the generation that was born between 1996-2010, following millennials. This generation has been raised on the internet and social media, with some the oldest finishing college by 2020 and entering the workforce.

They want a good quality of life and career growth. They've grown with iPhones in hand, YouTube at their fingertips and instant access to the internet.

• Nearly 60% of Gen Z is enrolled in college, making your campus the most uniquely diverse it has ever been.

This generation of students has re-conceptualized the world around them. More than previous generations, Gen Z has a particularly evolved outlook on learning, technology, economics, and work, four factors that heavily influence their education choices. As universities compete for the attention and attendance of this new generation, understanding what differentiates, motivates, and inspires Gen Z students is crucial.

By examining Gen Z’s views, assumptions and expectations about learning, technology, economics and work, you can better understand how your university can support and transform for this generation.

The Gen Z View of Learning

• Students are the most influential group of educational trendsetters - they make decisions and relate to their educational paths in a highly analytical way.
• Gen Zers are accustomed to free, easily accessible information that is both high-quality and up-to-date through services.
• They rely on YouTube to become more knowledgeable and gain skills that will prepare them for the future - 85% of Gen Z watches at least one video each week to learn a new skill.
• With so much information at their grasp, Gen Z is hyper cognitive and excels in more productive split-tasking, splitting time and attention between several tasks at once, continuously refocusing their attention from one task to the other. As a result, Gen Z’s average attention span is just 8 seconds. Time is a commodity and therefore needs to be spent as efficiently as possible.
• Your Gen Z students are experts at finding and digesting information quickly and easily. They’re accustomed to instant, curated knowledge, and prefer self-learning, applied learning, and immersive educational experiences.

We would like you to mark your calendar for a Mandatory Parent-Student meeting on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. We will meet in the Bernal forum at 6:00 p.m.

ALL travelers must attend. Student travelers must be accompanied by a parent. At this meeting, we will be introducing teacher-chaperones, handing out finalized itineraries, announcing bus groups, giving hotel and flight information, lists of suggested clothing and items to pack, and discussing behavior guidelines which must be signed by both parent and student. The meeting usually lasts about an hour and a half. Bring a pen and a highlighter.

Also, please bring $55 in cash to pay for each traveler's baggage fees. These fees are not included in the trip price because we never know in advance which airlines we will be traveling with or what their fees will be. This year, we will be traveling with United ($25) and Alaska ($30). This money will be collected at our meeting and will be paid in a lump sum by the chaperone at the ticket counter. This greatly speeds up check in when you are traveling with a group of 149 people, as you can imagine!

Please make every effort to clear your calendar to attend this important mandatory meeting.

Have an absence? Please attend Bernal's Super Saturday Session on SATURDAY, MARCH 7th from 8:15am - 12:30pm! Students will participate in fun St. Patrick's Day themed activities such as: St. Patty's BINGO, Roll a Rainbow, Potato Bowling, 4 Leaf Clover Hunt, Pot of Gold Coin Toss, Lucky Charm Challenge and 5 Line Limericks!

Permission slips will be sent home on Monday, February 24th and must be returned by Tuesday, March 3rd.

Attending the Super Saturday will allow students to make up one absence from this school year. Students need to turn in their permission slip by Tuesday, March 3rd and attend the full session so they can:

• Earn 10 Bronco Bucks!

• Be entered into a raffle to earn a pizza party for them and 5 friends!

• Earn an In-n-Out certificate!

• Be entered into a raffle to win a mile pass for P.E.!

Instructions the Spring Awards Night event:

Upon arrival, please enter the big gym through the main entrance doors. Parents, please find a seat in the bleacher stands and students please sit in the designated area based on your GPA (academic growth & 3.00-3.49, 3.5-3.99, or 4.0). Please arrive 15 minutes prior to ceremony start time.

You are welcome to take pictures with Bernal Staff at the end of the event.

8th Grade parents and students, please remain outside of the gym until the 7th grade ceremony has ended.

We are proud of our students’ academic accomplishments. Your presence at Spring Awards Night will complete the recognition of your child’s excellent work and diligent efforts.
