Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the December 10th, 2021, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Hello, Southeastern families:
If you are looking for a way to celebrate a Southeastern staff member, please consider a nomination for a RAVE award. RAVE stands for Recognizing All Valuable Employees.
Do you know an employee who makes HSE Schools a better place for others? Do you know someone who exemplifies the mission of HSE Schools? Have you observed an employee who goes above and beyond their job responsibilities/duties to make a difference?
These individuals deserve a 5-star “RAVE Review!”
The goal of the RAVE (Recognizing All Valuable Employees) Review is to identify and honor those, in their contributions and service to HSE Schools, who exemplify our mission. If you would like to nominate a staff member, please click this link.
We hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful winter break. We look forward to seeing all of our Explorers back in the building on Tuesday, January 4th!
Yours in education,
Danielle Chastain, Principal

Choose Wisely – A Guide to Gifts for Children
Choosing an appropriate children’s gift can be a difficult task. Here are some
guidelines to help you make great choices – gifts that go beyond the latest craze
and provide years of value and entertainment.
- Play together: Look for toys and games that require family participation.
Card and board games, dominoes, marbles, checkers, chess, and word and
spelling games are a few good examples.
- Promote independent play: Make sure your child has toys and activities
he/she can enjoy alone such as Legos, blocks, stuffed animals, puzzles and
craft kits.
- Ready, action: Children need physical exercise. A ball, bat, junior golf
clubs, tennis racquet, in-line or ice skates, jump rope, hula hoop, Frisbee or
badminton set are great ways to promote physical fitness.
- Something to show for it: Children love to produce things. Think about
buying an inexpensive or disposable camera and photo album, paint set and
some paper, sketch book and colored pencils, mosaics, sewing or weaving
kits, beading materials, Origami paper, or a cookbook and cooking utensils.
- Lesson learned: Sign your child up for a few lessons or classes in activities
like karate, ballet and tap dancing, guitar, gymnastics, piano, tennis, sewing,
basketball and painting. You might ignite a lifelong passion.
- Make reading a gift: Give a subscription to an age-appropriate magazine,
a book on tape, or combine a toy with a book (e.g. a piece of sports equipment
and a biography of a famous athlete).
- Avoid the screens: If you do decide to purchase video games, buy only
age- and content-appropriate games (check the game’s Entertainment Software
Rating Board rating. Visit www.esrb.org for more information) and
limit the amount of time your children spend playing them.

Classroom Winter Parties
Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer. All volunteers have been contacted by PTO with more details. Please check your spam if you did not receive it. Parents, if your name was drawn to attend, please do not arrive more than 15 minutes prior to the start of the party.
Please note each grade's party is at a different time. All volunteers must have a Safe Visitor Badge on file with the district in order to attend. (Volunteers are NOT allowed to bring siblings with them to the parties.)
Safe Visitor Required for Volunteers/Chaperones/Class Parties
Anyone volunteering in the building or chaperoning a field trip must have a SafeVisitor background check on file with the district prior to volunteering and spending time in the building. If you have not yet completed the background check, please click below to get started. Questions? Call the front office at (317) 594-4340.
NWEA Testing
North West Educational Assessment (NWEA) testing is administered three times per year for all K-8 HSE students. During the months of December and January, the winter NWEA testing assesses student skills and provides actionable data for Reading and Mathematics. Our teachers, administrators, and support staff observe students daily to understand individual achievement and growth. NWEA is another tool to understand and approach learners in what they have learned and what they are ready to learn. Classroom performance and NWEA results provide the data and resources to deliver effective instruction for all students to grow. This winter window of testing will also be used in part to identify students in need of high ability services. Students may also be identified for high ability services during the spring window of testing in May. More information about identification for high ability services can be found on the HSE Schools website.
New for 2021, NWEA has developed an extension to our typical reading assessment for grades K-2. This winter, students will test as noted below:
- December 1-17 NWEA Oral Reading Fluency and Dyslexia Screener for grade K-2
- December 1-17 NWEA Reading and Math Growth Testing for grades K-8
*NWEA has a modified assessment for second grade students who score at or under grade level benchmark. Your student’s report may reflect that modification.
Please know quarantines, absences and retests may affect individual classroom schedules. Reports from NWEA to share student growth targets and percentile performance will be sent home in January once all testing and make-up testing is completed.

Arriving to School Late
Morning car rider line ends at 7:45 a.m. If you are dropping your student(s) off at school after morning car rider, and there are no adult staff members present outside, you MUST park your car, walk your student into the building, and sign him/her in at the table inside door #1. It is a safety concern to let students out curbside without adult supervision, and we want to be certain that all students are safe while entering/exiting the building. Also, students dropped off late will be marked “tardy" in Skyward. A student is considered tardy when arriving after 7:45.
