A bit about Botswana

Botswana is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. It is a vey flat country, and up to 70% is covered by the Kalahari Desert. Botswana is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. Although poorly defined, but it also boarders Zambia to the north near Kazungula Zambia but this border only stretches a few hundred meters long.

Major issues within the country

HIV Aids: HIV aids is a huge issue for the population of Botswana, with 24% of all adults (2006) being effected by HIV aids.

Drought: Botswana has been devastated by drought over the last decade. In Botswana there is so little rain fall that the surface water that comes from the rain is only able to sustain 5% of the population each year. Botswana relies on water being brought into them from neighboring countries which means the price of water is very expensive due to the transporting costs. Due to recent advances, people of Botswana are now able to access some water from the ground (ground water). This has been able to ease the effects of the drought but has taken its toll on the land.

Desertification: Desertification is a type of land degeneration that is sweeping though Botswana. Desertification is when dry land becomes increasingly arid, typically losing its bodies of water, as well as vegetation and wildlife, meaning that no crops are able to survive resulting in a severer lack of food which is unable to sustain the population.

For males who live in Botswana, the average life expectancy is 64.1 years, and the average life expectancy for females who live in Botswana is sitting at 67.3 years. This in turn gives Botswana the world life expectancy ranking of 132.
