Monte Vista 2023: September 11th-15th
September Is Attendance Awareness Month
School success goes hand in hand with good attendance! Every day is important. Many MPUSD students miss 10 percent of the school year - about 18 days a year or just two (2) days every month. Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance, and retention in later grades.
Did You Know?
- Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
- Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.

Announcements for the Week
**Fall Monte Vista Club interest forms should be going out as early as late this week but no later than Monday, September 18th. They should be returned (online or hard copy) by Monday, September 25th. Club notifications will go out at the beginning of Fall Break at latest. Clubs will begin Monday, October 9th. A Parent Square went out about a few more clubs we would like to have to inquire if any parents are interested in being compensated to run it. Please note. For the Fall Club session, we are only offering them to Grades 1-8. We will introduce some a few Kinder age clubs in the January-March Winter session.
1) Student Council for grades 3-5 has been announced as well as Grades 4-8 Soul Patrol! We are using this upcoming school week to further recruit for our Grades 6-8 Student Council, which will involve having leadership officer positions and a collaboration/connection with the leadership team at Monterey High.
2) We still have a very long list of parents who have not yet completed their annual registration first day packets online. Our office has sent a Parent Square to these families to get this taken care of as soon as possible (these are required documents). It should only take about 10-30 minutes to do.
MPUSD Online Registration. For those families who may need support in completing the online registration, Berenice Hernandez or Anahi Gamboa, Monte Vista attendance clerk and school secretary respectively, can address any questions at this time. 831-392-3890, bhernandez@mpusd.k12.ca.us or agamboa@mpusd.k12.ca.us.
3) Grades 7-8 Monterey Co-ed Soccer Teams game schedule was released via Parent Square this past Friday. Most games will be on Wednesdays and Fridays either 4:00 or 5:15. See SCHEDULE for more information.
4) We have a very important meeting for all grade 8 parents who have consented for their child to attend Ocean Pines in Cambria the last week of November. The meeting will take on Monday, September 11th, 6PM-6:30PM at the zoom link below. We will be discussing the schedule at the science school, lodging, transportation, packing needs, and additional fundraising needs in order to get us there. Hope to see you there!

7) We have great news! The Pebble Beach Company Foundation has chosen us for a Campus Beautification Day (for funding and for staff volunteer support along with all of our families and staff who come out that day). More details to come, but it will be the morning of October 28th.
8) Now that beginning of the school year iReady reading diagnostic assessments for grades 1-8 are completed, later this week, we will be sending out the assessment report to parents via Parent Square. This is a baseline for your child and their related growth and stretch goals for the school year in literacy and math.
9) Monterey High School's Homecoming Parade will take place starting at 3:00pm on Friday, September 15th.
