High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
Week of November 7
Another week in the books, here at BWHS! This week we celebrated the long-anticipated opening of our new Spirit Shop. BWHS marketing students have been working hard to prepare for this Grand Opening and the shop is selling exclusive, student-designed merchandise. We are so excited to watch the shop grow.
We will have another round of Parent-Teacher conferences on Thursday, November 10. Please contact your child's teacher(s) or the main office to schedule.
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.
Spirit Shop Grand Opening
Pre-ACT Given in December
The pre-ACT (practice ACT) is scheduled for December 8. This test, open to sophomores and juniors is $17 and registration is now available through Schoology. (The fee will be added to your student's account after the test.) This is an excellent opportunity for all students to prepare for the ACT which is given to all students in the spring of junior year for FREE (one-time only). Additionally, the pre-ACT gives some information to help with college and career planning after high school. Questions, see the School Counseling office.
A Message from our School Resource Officer...
Our SRO, Deputy Snyder would like to share the following message with our families:
I have been made aware by some students that some unknown person is attempting to hack them on their snap chat. The unknown person is using phone # 's to make them think they know the person and they are asking for money. I just wanted to make sure everyone is aware of this. Reminder, if you get a strange snap chat or a strange call from someone and they are asking for money or personal information, you should block the phone # and not speak with the person. You should never give out any personal information and make sure your social media accounts are private.

Huge Congratulations to FFA
Our FFA students have done it again! The Floriculture team participated nationally for the first time in our school's history. Traditionally, Ohio teams earn the lowest-level rank in this event. This year's team decided to make their goal to attain the highest rank (gold) After all the scores were totaled, our team earned a GOLD rating by placing 7th overall out of 45 state-winning teams. Maddy Jones, Jordyn Lokey, and Sophie Marvin received gold ratings, and Lilly Cappittee earned a silver rating. The team was at a massive disadvantage going into this event. Nearly all schools competing are horticulture programs, and we do not offer a single horticulture class for students. All their knowledge was gained on their own time outside the classroom!
The Food Science team also faced stiff competition from 38 state-winning teams. This was a very young group and was entirely new from last year. The team placed 2nd overall, also earning a GOLD rating! Olivia Jenkins and Landon Sewell earned silver ratings while Mallory Cline and Haylie McComas earned gold ratings. Haylie also was recognized for placing 9th overall out of more than 150 competitors and will receive a scholarship for this achievement. This team also broke a record! The event includes a team product development component in which students were asked to design a vegan noodle meal with a target market for millennials and Gen Z. The team earned a 399/400, the highest score any team has earned in the event's 25-year history.
Updates from the School Counseling Office
Sophomores to Visit DACC:
All sophomore students will have the opportunity to visit the Delaware Area Career Center on Tuesday, November 22. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to check out some labs at DACC, in-person, so they are able to see if this might be the right fit for them!
College Application Day:
The next senior application day will be November 18th and can only be attended during students' study hall or lunch period. See the School Counseling office if you have any questions!
ASVAB Test to be Given in November:
The ASVAB test will be given on November 17 for interested students. This test is FREE and is a great tool for career planning. It can also be used for entrance into the miliary if that is the path your student is pursuing. Sign-ups can be found on Schoology or in the School Counseling office.

BWHS Academic Boosters
Academic Boosters - who are we? We are a group of organized parents who provide support to help improve the academic experience for all students, parents, and staff at BWHS. We provide An Evening of Excellence in September to recognize sophomores, juniors, and seniors who earned a 3.5 GPA the previous year. We sponsor the annual Academic and Military Signing in the spring for graduating seniors who have been offered college scholarships and graduating seniors who have enlisted in Military Services. Students who earn a 5 on their AP exam receive a High Five yard sign provided by and delivered to their home by members of the Academic Boosters. Our staff at BWHS is crucial to the success of our students and the academic booster parents show them just how much we appreciate them by providing a few very small tokens of appreciation during staff appreciation week in April. We have many other ideas of ways we can expand and continue to support the academic efforts of our students and staff! We are looking forward to a productive and fun year!
Meetings are typically at 6:30pm on the second Monday of each month. (No December meeting.) This year, our meetings are as follows: 11/14, 1/9, 2/6, 3/13, 4/3, and 5/8.
