Welcome Back!
Dear Klem South Families,
Welcome back to the 2018-2019 school year! We are already off and running and we look forward to making this the best school year yet. When students arrived on Tuesday, the staff at KS was eagerly waiting to greet them. We are so happy to have our students back at school and filling the halls with laughter and excitement.
As we welcome back so many returning families, we are also extremely pleased to extend a warm welcome to the students and families who are new to the Webster or KS community. We know that you will love it here!
This summer, the building went through some major transitions. Not only did we receive new bathrooms, the KS family also welcomed in a new principal. Martha End has assumed the role of principal at Klem South Elementary school, taking over the position previously held by Erin Land. Martha and Erin worked together during the last week of August and will continue to partner with one another during this transition process.
This first newsletter has a lot of information in it. It is our hope to send this electronic communication to you monthly. We feel that our partnership with families will directly benefit our students. We are so appreciative of your support and communication. Never hesitate to reach out. If you need printed copies of any of the documents, please contact the main office and we will be happy to print them for you.
Thank you for sharing your precious children with us. We promise to treat them as our own and we look forward to seeing you at school throughout the year.
Sincerely,
The Klem South Team

Got soap?
Hi Families,
Did you vacation this summer , travel often for work or pleasure, or just like to visit hotels? Do you take all of the hotel samples but never use them? We need your help! My class is collecting sample size shampoo, conditioners, lotions, toothpastes/dental supplies, etc., from hotels. We will organize these items in Ziploc bags and donate them kids and families in need.
You can send the items to school with your child. There is a black cart located in the front entryway. Have your child place their supplies in there. Once the cart is filled, my class will individually bag them and we will bring them to a center.
Thank you so much for your help with this project.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Piwko

Positive Behavior Support
By now, you most likely have heard about the Positive Behavior Support program that is underway at school. We have identified common expectations for our school that provides a reminder to our students, staff and visitors about the expectations for us all to Cooperate, be Accountable, Respect each other and strive for Excellence. The students have heard this message in their classrooms. In addition, our students have heard about using “CARE” in all areas of our school, including the hallways, cafeteria, bathrooms and playground.
Once again, we appreciate the support you provide in reinforcing the importance of positive behavior at school with your children. Research tells us that universally promoting positive behaviors creates a healthy learning environment for our students. We know that the support students receive from home is a critical part of the success of our school.
Thank you for your support.
Student Pick Up Procedure
If you are planning to pick up your child from school, please send in a note for your child to give to their teacher. In the note, you should include the student’s first and last name, as well as the time and reason that you plan to pick them up and the name of the person that will be signing them out.
In the event that you need to call for a pick-up, please call the office at: (585) 872-1320 as soon as possible to allow enough time for us to notify the staff involved. If you are directed to our voicemail, please hang up and call back to ensure that we receive the instructions.
For early pickups, go to the office and a staff member will call the student for you.
If you are picking up your child at dismissal time of 3:20 PM (giving you a 10 minute head start before the buses depart), please arrive 5-10 minutes prior. Our lobby doors will be opened at 3:10 PM and our building aide will check you in. Please have your ID available.
Bus Pass Procedure
If your child needs a bus pass to allow them to take a different bus home, please send a note to school with the following information:
- Date
- Student’s first and last name
- Bus number
- Address that they will be going to
- If they are going to another student’s home, the name of that student
Parent signature
News from the Nurse's Office
Please disregard the letter that was sent home with your child last week. The letter was written for peanut allergies ONLY and unfortunately there are several other foods that children are allergic to that need to be addressed. A new letter will be coming home with your child as soon as possible. I appreciate your help in keeping our students safe at Klem South school.
Thank you.

New from the Library
Welcome back! I hope our Klem South students found time to read some great books over the wonderfully warm summer!!
Each class will visit the library every six school days for a library lesson and book exchange. During their visit, they will learn skills to help them better use library materials and further develop a love of reading and literature. They will also have experience using many of the technologies available to them at Klem South. The goal is for all students to work toward becoming independent users of libraries and all of the resources they have to offer.
While your children have library books at home, please help them remember to:
¨ Find a safe place to keep your book while at home (high and dry!)
¨ Keep library books dry
¨ Have clean hands when reading library books
¨ Turn the pages from the upper right hand corner
¨ Report books to the library that are damaged
¨ Return books to the library on time
Books damaged by leaky water bottles
Book damaged by dogs or younger siblings

News from the PTSA
Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer. We have added some new faces to our building committee team. Join us at our Welcome back meeting on September 26th to meet our new members!
PTSA calendars and memberships are for sale. You can purchase a calendar at the school for $5. New this year, Klem South PTSA will receive all funds from memberships and calendars purchased at Klem South. You may purchase a calendar at one of our upcoming events or send in $5 cash or check made payable to Klem South PTSA in an envelope and one will be sent home. Calendars are a great way to keep track of school and PTSA events. Memberships are $10 and can be purchased online at websterptsa.org or upcoming events. Purchase of a membership is not a commitment to volunteer, though we sure do appreciate any time to can give.
Did you know that our Klem South PTSA does so many GREAT things for our kids and our school? Plans are already in the works for some fun filled activities for this year. The VIP dance, literacy night, math night and the MaryAnn Gangi fun night, just to name a few. The PTSA also sponsors awards and medals for 4th graders, yearbooks for 5th graders, and field day for the entire school! We can’t do it alone and we need volunteers now more than ever.
Our greatest need at this time is volunteers for Treasurer, fundraising, and the VIP Dance. Please consider donating your time to one of these valuable roles. There are people to help you transition into the new position.
Upcoming Events:
Kindergarten Playground Social – September 8, 11:00am – 12:00pm
PTSA Meeting – September 26th 6:30 – we hope to see you there!

Welcome Back, One Webster!
On behalf of the entire Webster Central School District Board of Education, welcome back to school! Tuesday, September 4 began what is sure to be an exciting school year for our One Webster community! We also welcome back Tammy Gurowski as our new president and Linda Dioguardi as our new vice president. Many thanks to Mike Gustin, board member since June 2013, who recently resigned due to personal and professional commitments. Your board will explore options to fill the remainder of Mr. Gustin’s term which runs through June 2019.
During his annual opening Superintendent’s Conference, Superintendent Gumina identified a new way of looking at the foundational “3 Rs” associated with education. Traditionally, we have thought of the 3 Rs as Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic. Mr. Gumina shared a message with the entire One Webster faculty and staff about our district’s perspective on building on those foundational 3 Rs for this school year through our Relationships, Resilience, and Reflection. Those three Rs are the fulfilling byproducts of what our district accomplishes together, guided by our vision, “Compassionately Connected, Joyfully Engaged, Always Learning”. (Of course, we will still be engaged in plenty of reading, writing, and arithmetic, too!)
We can’t wait to visit with so many of you at each of your school families throughout the year. If you ever have any questions, comments, or suggestions for your board of education, be sure to reach out to your school’s 2018-19 liaison (Liaisons are noted above in the BOE directory. State Road ES will be covered by current members on a rotating basis).
Webster CSD Announces School Start Time Change for FALL 2019
During our August 14 meeting, your board of education approved the district’s proposal to change start times for our elementary and secondary students (to approximately 8:45 a.m.-3:15 p.m. for secondary schools and 7:45 a.m.-2:10 p.m. for elementary schools with all times plus or minus five minutes), effective ONE YEAR FROM NOW, in fall 2019. This timeline allows us to spend the next 12 months communicating the details of this positive change for our One Webster community. For more information, please CLICK HERE. In addition, we will have a new website to share in the coming weeks with even more information and frequently asked questions about this important change for WCSD.
Capital Improvement Project Announced
Also during our August 14 meeting, a newly proposed capital improvement project was discussed that will be up for a vote by our Webster CSD community later this year. The proposed $69.5 million capital project will focus on improvements that will make a difference to our entire One Webster community, and further strengthen our continued partnership with the Town of Webster. Included in this proposal are state-of-the-art media centers at all elementary schools, Willink Middle School, and Webster Schroeder High School. There are also proposed renovations to the technology education wing at Webster Thomas High School, improvements to playing fields at both high schools, and the purchase of the Town of Webster’s field at Basket Road. WCSD’s transportation center will also see improvements and expansion as part of this proposed project. We will continue to update you on this project throughout fall 2018.
2018-19 Tax Rates Approved
WCSD’s Board of Education approved the 2018-19 tax rates as presented by Assistant Superintendent for Business Brian Freeman during the August 14 regular board meeting. The approved, final tax rates for WCSD are located in the table below.
Additionally, the equalization ratio, as determined by New York State, changed for the Towns of Webster (86.5% to 81.5%), Penfield (100% to 95%), and Walworth (100% to 98%). These changes impacted the rates for all four towns located in the district.
Be sure to read this monthly column from your board of education shared in school newsletters throughout the year. We look forward to serving our students, families, faculty, and staff once again this year!
