“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
Revisiting #ClassroomLeadership
Stephen Covey's definition - "Leadership is communicating other's worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves".
In the classroom we use the term "classroom management" and we know that in leadership there is always an element of management but as Stephen Covey says, "you manage things, but we lead people." We don't like to feel managed but we do want to be inspired and engaged in the work that we are asked to do and our students want the same. Couros says, "Maybe the term "classroom leadership" needs to be more dominant in our conversations about teaching and learning. The reality is that if people are inspired, they won't have to be managed at all, they will usually just do great things". Wow! what a concept and a better way to look at what you do every day in the classroom.
George Couros goes on to say in his article that "there are so many complexities of a classroom, and (we) understand the thoughts behind the idea of "classroom management," but this is more about changing perspectives first on how we see our students and how we unleash their potential".
George talks about how "classroom management" is focused on short-term wins which many times will lead to long-term losses! Do things like "rewards" for behavior lead to compliance now and complacency later? What about things like "sticker charts" and their long-term effect on our students? We are not asking teachers to throw out everything they do for management in the classroom but to think differently about their students and how we want them to be the leaders of tomorrow. Are we empowering them to lead?

Reminder - Please be on time everyday!
Please remember that the teacher/staff workday starts at 8:40 with teachers at their door ready for kids to come in at 8:45 and staff ready to be on duty. We have had quite a few late faculty members coming in this year and we need to start 2nd semester on the right foot. I understand we all have bad mornings when everything goes wrong, stuck in traffic, etc. If you are not able to be at work on time, please just text me so I am aware and can prepare in case we need someone in your classroom or someone to cover your duty. We do not need students entering classrooms without a teacher in the room for safety as well as starting the day off on the right foot. The other reason we should all be on time is that everyone notices when you are late and it sends the wrong message to your peers if it is a pattern because they get to school on time! I have already contacted those that that needed a reminder but it is a good one for all of us!
