Bullying Prevention
Oakland County Health Network Recognizes October as National Bullying Prevention Month
OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (October 5, 2020) – October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The campaign was started in 2006 by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.
Throughout the month, individuals across the nation unite to promote the powerful message that bullying is never acceptable and should never be a part of childhood. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), students who are bullied are more likely to experience low self-esteem and isolation, perform poorly in school, experience physical symptoms (headaches, stomachaches, sleeping issues), and experience mental health issues such as depression, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety.
There are many types of bullying: physical, verbal, and social. One in five high school students reported being bullied at school in the last year. Reports of bullying are highest in middle schools, followed by high school. Cyberbullying has also become increasingly common especially among teenagers.
Bullying is preventable. What can we do to stop bullying before it starts?
· Promote family environments that support healthy development
· Provide quality education early in life
· Strengthen youth’s skills
· Connect youth to caring adults and activities
· Create protective community environments
· Intervene to lessen harms and prevent future risk
Together we can raise awareness about bullying and help create a world without bullying.
