"Letting Go and Moving On"
With respect to us, as educators/adults, when we stretch to advance our practice, we must make a conscious decision of letting go of stagnant practices in order to gain the humble power to move forward.

Principal's Corner
As the students say, "It has been a minute" since the last Monday Focus. But I am very excited about the start of the new calendar year and the start of our 4th Session. Over the Winter Break, we held our first SHS Winter Academy, 1/6/20- 1/10/20 from 9: am to 1 pm, with very good success. We averaged 23 students a day and we had 34 total credits earned. Much planning and work went into the success of the Academy, thank you goes out to Adriana Cabrera, Salud Cobarruvias, Roy Ludwig, Joe Hernandez, Eddie Briceno, Elizabeth Escalante-Smith, VUSD Nutritional Services, and the Principal of Sequoia High School. I was very impressed with our students, who illustrated maturity, self-discipline, and took care of business.
This Session we added over 30 students to the roster. It is always exciting to see new faces, but the student's needs continue to be the same. our motto is, "we can never change the way students come to Sequoia, but we can absorb their needs when they arrive," The strength of Sequoia is our philosophy of Restorative Practice, ability to connect and foster relationships, strong and rigorous academic program, academic support programs, social and emotional support services, safe school environment, and our ability to inspire students to perform at a higher level. Most of all we provide students the ability to "Let Go" of negative behavior and practices and the ability to "Hang On" to new goals and aspirations
This Friday marks the second week of the session, please ensure that grades are updated and push students to complete all missing assignments. AI is up and running, so please utilize their services.
Growth Mindset:
"Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives."
