The American System
The Future of America
What is it?
The American System is an economic plan proposed by Henry Clay that lays the foundations and guidelines for the American economy. Below is a detailed description of what the American System consists of.
Internal Improvement
Development of a system of internal improvements (such as roads and canals) which would help bring the nation together and be financed by the tariff and land sales revenues.
National Bank
Preservation of the Bank of the United States to stabilize the currency and rein in risky state and local banks.
Tariff
A high tariff on foreign goods to protect American industries and generate revenue for the federal government.
Why Should We Have the American System?
- The establishment of a protective tariff, a 20%-25% tax on imported goods, would protect a nation’s business from foreign competition and promote the development of American manufacturing.
- The establishment of a national bank would promote a single currency and gain the ability to issue sovereign credit.
- The improvement of the country’s infrastructure, especially transportation systems, makes trade easier and faster for everyone. Poor transportation is slow and can be very costly.
