From the Principal's Office....
Spring arrives on March 20th and we will be able to feel it in the building! It's a great time in an elementary school as the students and staff look forward to some sunshine, warmth and all the things come alive after a very long winter!
New York State Grades 3-8 ELA, Math and 4th Grade Science Assessment season also begins. Third, fourth and fifth graders will take the following assessments:
- Grades 3, 4, 5 - ELA: April 3rd and 4th 9 am - 11 am (approximately, since they are untimed)
- Grades 3, 4, 5 - Math: May 2nd and 3rd - 9 am - 11 am (approximately, since they are untimed)
- Grade 4 - Science Performance: May 31st (hands on experiments, ongoing throughout the day)
- Grade 4 - Science Written Examination: June 1st. 9 am - 11 am (approximately)
Thank you for all that you do to partner with us! It is much appreciated.
Fondly,
Asking for your help.......
- Allow your child to wear his/her watch in places other than school.
- Disable distracting functions on the watch during school hours.
- Please call school at 315-291-2261 to get messages to your child rather than texting him or her.
Time had an interesting article about children and smart watches that you might want to share with your child.
If a student's smart watch causes a disruption or distraction in class, the teacher will ask him or her to put it in their backpack or put it away as a warning. Continued use will result in a visit with me at which time I will take the watch, call a parent to let them know I have the watch and ask the parent to come and pick it up at school.
We appreciate your partnership in helping our kids stay focused on learning and social, face to face interaction with their peers and adults while at school. You are welcome to email me or call if you have any questions or concerns.
A GREAT resource for our students and their families!
Morning Mile Update!
Outdoor Recess! We have returned to our original recess/lunch schedule now that we have three substitute recess aides! Welcome Mrs. Holst, Mrs. Girzadas and Mrs. Swarts!
Main Entrance Construction
We understand the inconvenience for staff, students and families. I'll keep you informed via email as we get closer. If you have any questions, please give me a call.
Attendance Matters
Parents or guardians of students absent, tardy or leaving early at rates of 10%, 15%, 20% or more will be notified by letter of our concern. We know that there are many factors that lead to student attendance. We are happy to help your family with those matters and resolving any issues that may be contributing to the attendance pattern. Your child's teacher, Abbie Paine, our school counselor, school nurse Mikhel DeRosalia and I are available to consult and help you and your child in any way.
The attendance thresholds as of the end of March are:
- 10% absent, late and/or tardy = 13 days for the 18-19 school year so far
- 15% absent, late and/or tardy = 17 days for the 18-19 school year so far
- 20% absent, late and/or tardy = 23 days for the 18-19 school year so far
In addition, excused absences/tardies/early dismissal include the following:
- Personal illness
- Illness or death in the family
- Impassable roads
- Religious observance
- Military obligation
The attendance policy does not differentiate whether an absence/tardy/early dismissal is excused or unexcused. The policy includes both.
Please be sure to communicate through a note, phone call or email to school regarding your child's attendance. You can call Kim Shepard in the Attendance Office at 315-291-2263 or email her at kshepard@skanschools.org.
