English Department News
Teachers in the English Department engaged in a lively discussion of the teaching of writing with scholar Katherine Bomer, author of The Journey is Everything. This Professional Development session inspired and challenged English teachers to assess their instructional practices and collaborate on strategies to help students grow as writers. We look forward to implementing new activities and approaches that motivate writers to find their voice and their passions.

The Social Studies Department welcomes Mrs. Jozefczyk to the Sparta learning community. Mrs. Jozefczyk has been teaching for 8 years at West Essex HS. She is an avid volleyball player and is a coach for the Lady Spartans Volleyball team.
Mr. DeCrescenzi is sponsoring the inaugural year of the Rho Kappa History Honor Society this year. This honor society recognizes students who have shown advancement, interest and excellence in Social Studies classes. Twenty-three students have been self-nominated for this honor. Selection for this honor society requires that students not only do well in their social studies courses, but also that they have taken electives beyond the three required course offerings.
Mr. Brennan, along with English teachers Mrs. Gomez (SHS) and Mrs. Fitch (SMS) represented Sparta Public Schools at Kean University's Diversity Council on Global Education and Citizenship. This program has been promoting instructional programs and professional development for almost 30 years. Our participation in this program gave us insights into the latest materials and approaches to creating inclusive learning communities and promoting responsible citizens.
