Gerth's Gossip

This Week in Fourth Grade
General Information
WOW, I can't believe we are already into the 4th quarter! This year is flying by!
Report cards are available online today! We will do some goal setting early next week. Please have conversations with your student about some goals you think would be good for them to set for themselves. I will be doing the same with them at school.
Students are working hard to earn rewards for great cafeteria behavior...one day they got to watch cartoons at lunch. Way to go!
The kiddos looked cute in green today!
Spring is a busy time at SRE and we have several things to look forward to in these busy months. We will keep you posted as they come up, but do have some field trips to look forward to.

Literacy In Action
We are half way thru Unit 7. Our Big Question for this unit is "What does it take to explore space?" These past two weeks we have explored non-fictions text about forces and motion and elements of space. We have also worked with adverbs and drawing conclusions.
In writing, we have started our last major unit of study "Bringing History to Life." This will be an informational writing piece, combining a few styles of writing into one informational book. We began by talking about research, primary sources, credible/trustworthy websites and exploring Indiana topics. I am very excited to see how this progresses!
Math
Fourth grade:
This week, we worked in Unit 10 of Everyday Math, exploring symmetry, reflections and rotations. This is a short unit that is most a review of symmetry from 3rd grade and an introduction to geometry concepts that will be further explored in 5th and 6th grade.
Fifth grade:
This week, 5th grade finished up Unit 9 and took the test over this unit. Next week they will start with Unit 10 on algebra.
Indiana History
We spent time this week learning about the early cultures of Indiana territory. Students worked through Chapter 2 of their Social Studies workbook, reading and discussing the various Native American groups and the interactions with French and British explorers and traders.
Also as we dive into Indiana History some of you with older kiddos might remember the Famous Hoosier project....this is going to look different this year just in case you've been wondering when it might come up. The writing portion will be done mostly at school. We are still tweaking how the rest of this might unfold, but it's not going to be quite as big of an undertaking as in the past...just in case you were curious. Students will learn more info on this after Spring Break.
Students also have accounts for Pearson Realize online as well as text/workbooks. They have their log in information taped inside their assignment notebooks for the online tools including an online text. The easiest way to get there is from Smoky Row website and type Pearson in the search! I think for ipads an app can also be installed for easier use.
SRE's Book Fair Begins Next Week
The Book Fair is always a fun time for Rockets! Students will be allowed to visit any day next week. If you send cash with your kiddo please have them keep it in a zipped spot in the backpack in and envelope with their name. Thank you to all of the volunteers that help Mrs. Towle with this big and amazing undertaking!
