Cri-du-chat it a genetic disorder. Its a form of mental retardation. It also means that you would have a high pitch cat-like cry.
Characteristics
There are a lot of symptoms for Cri-du-chat like small head size, mental retardation, week muscle tone, and low birth weight. The most important symptom it a high pitched cat-like cry. That also effects them in their daily life's, like they have to be with doctors and therapists all day. They are just like everyone else in certain ways to like how that will live as long as a normal person.

Kids with Cri-du-chat is mutated, because they do not have a chromosome 5 (5p-). A small percentage of the children with Cri-du-chat receive the mutation from a parent, during the egg and sperm development. Chromosome 5 has about 900 genes on it, so the people who have Cri-du-chat are missing 900 genes. They lose then genes because of the short arm of the chromosome 5

Treatment
To help people with a disorder they normal go through treatment, but if you have Cri-du-chat you can't because their is no treatment. Even though there is no treatment the doctors can still help you. They can put you through language and physical therapy, they can also put you in consistent education intervention. But people who have it will live with it forever.

Jerome lejeune, identified Cri-du-chat in 1963. Cri-du-chat if French means "cry of the cat". 1in 20,000 baby's get Cri-du-chat, 50,000 baby's get Cri-du-chat. Baby's are normal diagnosed with the disorder at age 1-2. Cri-du-chat is a important disorder that people need to pay more attention to and help the kids that have it by hanging out with them or spending time with them
