Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby families,

As part of a professional learning opportunity during our last faculty meeting, our staff reviewed Dr. Sonia Soltero's recent article on the Importance of Cross-linguistic Connections and Metabilingual Awareness (Nov. 2019) for applications of strategies here at our school and our Two-Way Immersion program. Cross-linguistic connections and what she terms "metabilingual awareness" is an area in which teachers and students intentionally and strategically engage in comparing and contrasting English and Spanish, analyzing the similarities and differences, and also playing with the two languages. For example, if a teacher during language arts is teaching about literary characters in Spanish she would write and say "características físicas (physical characteristics) in Spanish and later ask students ¿Cómo se dice características físicas en inglés? (How do you say "características físicas" in English?). The teacher would then write on the board or pocket chart the words in English and Spanish using a different color as a scaffold for students to differentiate the two languages. Moreover, the teacher can simultaneously conduct a mini-lesson of analyzing and discussing the differences and similarities between those words in the two languages.

The teachers are also focusing on cognates (two words that in English and Spanish sound, look, and mean the same). For example, in the 2nd grade unit on Ancestors: "Ancestros"--Ancestors;" Historia"--History;" Pasado--Past." Cognates can help increase students vocabulary in both languages. Dr. Soltero also encourages using a sense of humor and playing with languages. For example, bilingual jokes such as: "Soy milk" is really milk introducing itself in Spanish ("Soy" in Spanish means: I am).

The district has started the process to select a permanent name for our school and we'd like our community of students, parents, and teachers and staff to participate and provide input. As you know, this school year, we've been operating under the temporary name of Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School. This is a name that the Transition Team, which worked together last spring, selected in order for us to have a smooth start to the school year. It has been a great school year as we've come together to learn as one community and it's now time to select our permanent name. We need you to help us. Please read the announcement and process on the district website and let's work together to select our school's name.

A big shout out to parents Mari Abundiz and Meghan Rossi as well as the rest of the PTO Unidos volunteers for a great family, community building event last Friday night of Bingo! We raised funds for the 5th grade Outdoor Education field trip, which is greatly appreciated. More importantly, families had a fun night out here at the school. I also want to recognize Cesar Zuniga for "modernizing" our Bingo night by using an application on the computer and five TV monitors spread around the cafeteria so it was easier for everyone to see and play the games!

Please check out the Lost and Found in the Cafeteria as it is starting to overflow again with coats, sweatshirts, lunch boxes, and water bottles.

We continue to have school tours for prospective new parents and a lot of interest to join the Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion community next school year. Registration and School of remains open until February 12th to choose our school. A reminder that we are a School of Choice only school and not a neighborhood school. TK and siblings of current students do have priority in the district lottery. The district will place students maintaining the "Two way" ratio of 50% of students who are native English speakers and 50% of students who are native speakers in Spanish at home. School tours are every Thursday from 8:30--9:45 am in Room 204. Families should call the office to reserve a space on the tour, 650.482.2415.

For current 5th grade parents, your child will attend Kennedy Middle School in 6th grade in the Spanish Immersion strand next year. There are tours and also opportunities for shadowing students at Kennedy. 5th grade parents need to call the Kennedy office to arrange shadowing: (650) 482-2409.
