From Mr. Forster
YES Parents,
We are just now entering September, and we have already accomplished so much at Yarbrough Elementary. Our Family Book Club, Math and Reading Celebrations and Curriculum Nights have helped kick off our school year by celebrating students and opening our school to our YES families. In the month to come we will have many additional ways to ensure your student gets connected to our school. Our favorite monthly event, Club Day, will kick off on September 7th. This school favorite began following the last development of our YES Strategic Plan. The idea was to find additional ways to connect our students to adults within our school. Each teacher has a club and each student chooses a club. They quickly find a common interest! I am excited to get my club organized in Outdoor Games – where students will play many of my favorites from my youth like Capture the Flag and Ultimate Frisbee – something different every month.
I hope that your first month has gone well and that your child is excited about the rest of the school year.

Music Makers to Begin Soon
Calling all Yarbrough Elementary School students interested in joining the YES Music Makers! During choir rehearsals, students will sing a variety of music, work on vocal technique, and prepare music for performances. No auditions are required to be a part of this group, but students must be dedicated, attend all rehearsals, participate in the performances, and enjoy singing. We will rehearse every Tuesday after school beginning September 11 until December 4. For those interested, parents should read, complete, sign and return the form on the back of the yellow information letter that came home in Tuesday’s folder. Email Mrs. Oprandy at tboprandy@auburnschools.org if you have any questions.
Smile! It's Picture Day!

October 5th– Teach Flu a Lesson vaccine clinic
The flu vaccine will be offered to students with private insurance, ALLKIDS, Medicaid and qualifying uninsured students. PEEHIP member’s children do not qualify. They may receive their vaccines during the Wellness visits to their schools.

Forms will be sent home at a future date. There will be no flu mist/nasal spray vaccine.
November 1st – UAB Scoliosis Screening for 5th graders
All 5th grade students will be screened for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) as required by law. The purpose of the screening is to recognize any deviation from normal so the need for treatment can be determined. The procedure is simple. The screener will observe your child’s posture while standing and bending forward. Students should wear a loose fitting shirt that day that can be pulled up easily so their back can be seen. A fitted shirt or camisole can be worn under clothing. The screening will be done in a private location and boys and girls will be screened separately. If scoliosis is suspected, you will be notified to receive further evaluation from your private physician. If you do not wish for your child to be screened at school, please send a note indicating that your child will be screened by his/her primary physician.
Fitness Fun with Coach Smith
Our Bike Safety Program will begin for 4th grade on Monday, Sept 17th. More information and

Students can complete 3 activities per week and return the calendar to school to become a “Fit Knight” and pick something out of the treasure box in PE. Parents please sign off on your child's activity.
For extra cool prizes, students/parents can complete 2 physical activities per month and post on Instagram @coachsmithyespe to become eligible for an end of the month drawing for other cool prizes. Music Moments with Mrs. Oprandy
Art Adventures with Mr. Daniel
Our YES fourth grade art students recently completed their "Block-headed Avatars" in mixed-media (watercolor, crayon, and colored pencil). They used a variety of rendering techniques (pointillism, graded washes and smooth blending) to develop their compositions. We studied the works of Roy Lichtenstein and Georges Seurat during this project. Our next project will involve exploring the wonderful world of "Impressionism" through the eyes of Claude Monet.
Our YES fifth grade art students recently completed a study of Rene Magritte's "The Listening Room." We used a variety of media (watercolor, crayon, and colored pencil) to develop these compositions. We also explored the use of primary and secondary color schemes within works of art. These excellent artists utilized graded washes, pointillism, and smooth blending to render their own versions of "The Listening Room." Proportion, perspective and visual texture were explored as well. Our next project will involve exploring the works of Wayne Thiebaud. We will utilize complementary color schemes, proportion and perspective to develop "Giant Ice Cream Cones" in oil pastel.

Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Hello September! Time flies when you are having fun. I hope you and your children are off to a great start with this school year. If you have not established your daily school routines it is not too late. Please set bed times so your children get their 8 to 10 hours of needed sleep; and some may even need more. Encourage them to prepare the night before for the next morning (pack up backpack, lay out clothes, sign all papers…). Start their day with breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Children academically perform better when they are fueled for the day with nutritious food. Routines also involve reading and completing homework. Please start good habits early on. Remember you have the power to give optimism to your children every day. Send them off to conquer the day with a hug and a positive attitude.
I am hosting a practicum student from Auburn University this semester. Please help me welcome Ms. Keri O’Neill. She will be working with our students in the same capacity as a school counselor. She will work under my direct supervision as she works with individual students, small groups, and assists with Guidance lessons.
Please let me know if your children have a special need that you want me to be aware of; you can email me at klwalsh@aburnschools.org or call me at 887-1973. Please leave a message if I do not answer as I may be with children. Together we can make it happen.
Quote of the month by Donna B. Forrest
Plan to have the most positive attitude possible, no matter what the circumstances.
· This makes your strong, courageous character real to those around you.
· This positive attitude shows your dependability.
· Kindness and good choices are seen in people with positive attitudes.
