Science+Literacy=Better Together

A Two-Day Iowa Core Science Module 4 Workshop for K-5

Attention K-5 Science Educators & the Instructional Coaches & Administrators Who Support Them!

Better Together, a two-day workshop, focuses on the many ways science and literacy support one another in the elementary classroom. We know there never seems to be enough instructional time in a day, so this module provides multiple examples demonstrating how science and literacy standards can be achieved together.

Participants will don their student-learner hats as they complete an immersion in a three-dimensional storyline that uses literacy strategies to support students figuring out applicable Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) through Science and Engineering Practices (SEP) in order to understand a Crosscutting Concept (CCC). We will compare content and disciplinary literacy and consider what it means to view like a scientist. Day 2 examines what it means to write, talk, and listen like a scientist and how we can support and cultivate these characteristics in our elementary scientists to meet both the Iowa Core Literacy AND Science standards.
