BLACK HISTORY MONTH
We join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.
Ways to Celebrate
During Black History Month and throughout the year, reflect on more than 400 years of Black history and heritage in national parks and communities across the country. Find special places, historic moments, and personal journeys that contribute to conservations about Black representation, identity, and diversity in our nation's history and today.
PRESIDENTS DAY WEEKEND REMINDER
There is no school on Friday, February 12th and Monday, February 15th in observance of Presidents Day Weekend.
Presidents Day Fun Facts
- George Washington was the only president unanimously elected. Meaning all of the state representatives voted for him.
- John Adams died on the same day as Thomas Jefferson, July 4th, 1826. This day was also the 50th anniversary of the approval of the Declaration of Independence! James Monroe was the 5th president, but the 3rd to die on the 4th of July.
- After working at a Baskin-Robbins as a teen, President Obama no longer likes ice cream.
- Martin Van Buren was the only president to speak English as a second language. His first language was Dutch.
- John Tyler had 15 children.
- There are 35 parks named after American Presidents, and one park that celebrates four of them (but it’s named after a New York attorney)
- Presidents' Day, originally celebrated in honor of George Washington, the first president of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968 and officially took effect in 1971 moved this holiday to the third Monday of February. The day is also now widely known as Presidents' Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents.
- Presidents' Day never falls on the actual birthday of any American president.
- The White House Residence spans six floors and includes 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms. That makes for 412 doors, 28 fireplaces, eight staircases, three elevators, and the setup for an epic game of hide-and-seek.
