Week of May 8, 2022

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Greetings,

We are in week 3 of our EHT Idol competition! It’s not too late to vote! Best wishes to our contestants! This weeks contestants are Anthony Colon and Aaron Bullock versus Jamar Felder. The next round the week of the 16 is Kimora Stuckey versus Adrianna Allan. Don’t miss your chance to vote!

May 10 and 11 our PACE students went out to Advanced Welding! This has been some great hands on experiences and opportunities for their future in the workforce.

Ms. Portnoy took her advanced dance class on a field trip May 11 to the Atlantic County Teen Arts Festival. It was an awesome opportunity for the students to experience.

Mr. House, our Teacher of the Year and County Teacher of the Year, was asked to speak at the Atlantic County School Boards Association dinner meeting on May 11. He discussed his creative classroom lessons and his outdoor classroom and how students enjoy learning about the environment by being outside in it! He talked about the importance of connections and collaboration with the amazing teachers he has met across the state. We are so proud of his accomplishments!

On May 12 during 5th and 6th block there was a ceremony held for our seniors in the medical assistant internships, as they finished their program!

We are excited for seven of our students who took the Solidworks Certification Test on May 12 which will determine their acceptance to our Engineering 3 course next year.

Our band and percussion concert was held on May 12. Big shout out to Mr Wyckoff for all his time spent with our students which was evident in an amazing performance!

Mr. Martirone is at it again! He accompanied his AP Government class on a field trip to the National Constitution Center on May 13! Pictures to follow next week!

Our Advanced Networking 2 Students took the A+ Certification Test Exam at Ideal Institute of Technology on Friday, May 13th, Hopefully they completed the test without a problem.

Also on May 13 was the completion of all the AP testing. It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the AP students but they made it. Now we wait with the hope of some great scores by these excellent students!

As for athletics this week, We extend a big shout out to our Unified track and field students, paraprofessionals, teachers and parents!!! On Wednesday, the Unified Track Team traveled to Delsea for their first meet of the season. Students participated in the 100, 200, and 400m Relay, as well as the shot out, discus, and long jump! They followed up the event with a pizza party. Students had an awesome time!

Please see below for more recaps on our athletic accomplishments this week!

Until next week, have a wonderful weekend! Stay safe, be well, continue to dream of the possibilities ahead of us, be happy and smile at someone!

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Students of the Week

Nominee: Nohel Bustillo Rivera

Nominated by: Nicole Cavanaugh

I dropped money out of my back pocket and Nohel made sure he got my attention to let me know that I had dropped the money on the floor. I really appreciate his honesty.

Nominee: Ryan McKim

Nominated by: Jen Hauta

Ryan has worked very hard this year to work towards meeting many goals. He has really pushed himself academically and socially, but also personally overcame a few fears he had here in the school. Ryan is truly a special student who really wants to excel and make friends and make the most of his time in high school.

Advanced Biology

Mrs. Delaney's Advanced Biology class conducted an experiment to test the effects of a space environment on the growth of food. The students received two packets of seeds from the Tomatosphere project. Some of the seeds were launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on board SpaceX’s Dragon on July 18, 2016 and docked with the ISS two days later. The seeds were then brought back to Earth. The students grew both sets of seeds in the classroom ( labeled U and T) and observed the tomato plants to see which group , U or T, would have more seeds germinated . The students saw that more seeds germinated from the packets labeled U . The students sent their data in to the Tomatosphere project and received back the news that the group labeled U were the seeds that had been sent to space. The students then brainstormed ideas of why this may be and then also planted the tomato plants that were grown from seed into the outdoor garden.

The High School has adopted a new bullying-prevention program for this school year!

#DAY1--a staff and student-led philosophy that will serve to foster a building-wide atmosphere of kindness and inclusion.

This program was started a few years ago in Bergen County by the Tyler Clementi Foundation and has gained momentum throughout the state and country for use in schools, community groups, workplaces, and sports teams. We even have 3 of our own students who were selected by the foundation as leaders for this initiative!

The premise is simple: the adults in the building make a “declaration statement” about behavior that is expected, as well as behavior that is unacceptable, and we all pledge to conduct ourselves accordingly. This includes seeking help when we witness unacceptable behavior occurring.

This notion is called being an #Upstander.

#Day 1 Staff Declaration 2021

Has your student taken their #Upstander Pledge yet?!?
