Ms. Newton's Notes
Happy Monday!
I was happy to feel the weather change this weekend. While I do enjoy the warmth of the sunshine, it has been really hot for awhile and I was hoping for cooler weather soon. I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the nice weather. If not, tomorrow will be the perfect time to enjoy the nice weather for our Walk and Roll to School Day! If that's not your thing, then please plan to come out to our Book Fair Opening Night this Thursday from 3-7. We will have food and pops for your enjoyment as well. Bring the entire family!
F.AVE's Teacher of the Year
We are proud to announce Nailah Carty as our TOTY for the 19-20 school year. Her colleagues wrote that:
"Ms. Carty does a fantastic job of motivating her students through engaging, captivating lessons. Also, she ensures that students recognize that history is all about perspectives which, I feel, allows students to take ownership in their learning. I have been blessed to be on the same hallway as her this year. I see her constantly sharing her ideas and lessons which are thoroughly engaging. Through conversation and observation it is obvious that Ms. Carty puts students first in every decision she makes."
"Nailah has for the past 3 years put on the Black History program. You talk about
something that looks like a Hollywood production! This is it. Nailah seemingly
effortlessly directs these cast of thousands shows which involve 50 or more students,
including sound and set decoration people, she directs the teachers and what their
duties are. Nailah is meticulous about every minute detail concerning these
productions and it reacts with the student participants as they proudly present in front of friends and family."
Georgia Parent Survey
As part of the Georgia Department of Education school climate rating for schools, parents, students (grades 3-12), and staff are asked to complete parent surveys. The parent survey information is below. Please note that you may come to the school to complete this survey as well as complete it on a personal computer or device. Thank you in advance for taking the time to support our school.
Georgia Parent Survey
The Georgia Parent Survey contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using their personal computer, smartphone, or tablet. For parents who do not have access to the Internet, the media center will be open from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM to allow parents to complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school on the media center computers. All parents should be encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Survey responses are anonymous, self-reported, and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. The Georgia Parent Survey link is posted below.

Fall Book Fair Coming Thursday! Sign Up to Volunteer
- Come to our Book Fair Opening Night on Thursday, October 10th from 3:00-7:00 PM! Mojo's Pizza will be selling pizza and King of Pops will be selling popsicles from 4-7! You can be the first to shop at the fair, eat some yummy local food, and support F.AVE in one fell swoop!
- Sign your student up for eWallet! Instead of sending your child to school with easily misplaced cash or checks, you can go online and load money into an easily created student account. This allows you to set a spending limit, and any money not spent will revert back to you. We encourage this in lieu of sending money with your child. Click here to learn more!

CSD News
You may have noticed that over fall break, the City Schools of Decatur installed new signs to replace the existing signs on our school properties. The goal of these new signs is to reinforce the existing rules and guidelines for the use of our property. The use request statement on the signs is intended for groups using our properties for organized events and activities and all visitors during school hours. Organized use of school property, such as a soccer club or planned group events, must be authorized through a facility use agreement with City Schools of Decatur prior to the meeting or event. School grounds, such as playgrounds and fields, are still available for drop-in use by individual community members and families outside school hours and scheduled events. Organizations that have been given authorization through our facility use agreement will have priority on the space.
No changes have been made to the district's long-standing facilities use policies and practices. We continue to support the use of school greenspace by our neighbors and have simply posted these reminders about the responsible use of district facilities.
If you have questions about the facility use process and procedures, please contact Noel Maloof at nmaloof@csdecatur.net.

PTO News
Next Walk & Roll: Tuesday, October 8 - TOMORROW!
Join us for International Walk&Roll to School Day! We’ll be handing out numbered certificates again to all participants for a chance to win books from the media center AND a brand new "F.Ave Red" bike helmet! If you can't walk all the way, drive to Harmony Park (corner of Mead, Oakview, and Eastlake) and walk the final 0.4 miles. Additional 'Stop, Drop, and Walk' routes to F.Ave are found here. If you must drive, please be extra cautious -- give children extra room (remember, a 3-foot distance is the law, but more is always better!), as they might not be as sturdy or mindful on their bikes as adults.

Read-a-Thon is Coming: 10/19 - 10/24
Get ready for our first Read-a-thon at F.Ave! What better way to raise money for our school than with a friendly reading competition? After stocking up on books from the Book Fair, students will be invited to compete with their classmates to see who can read the most. Classes and individuals with most minutes read will earn some cool prizes, not to mention bragging rights!
Read-A-Thon (formerly Math-a-Thon) is one of our primary fundraisers for the year. The money raised is crucial to support the PTO budget which helps to fund initiatives such as field trips, teacher grants, diversity & equity efforts, social activities like picnics and movie nights, common area improvements and free yearbooks. Keep an eye out for reading logs and pledge sheets which will be coming home soon. And, please encourage your student to ask neighbors and family for their support!
