Happy Break!
Hope you are enjoying the beginning of February break! Happy 100 Days of School--here are some 100 year old faces for you:
Reading
Our eager readers have been engaging in story sequencing. We have been retelling stories using first, next, and last. Students have been focusing on inferential questions by using clues and hints from the book to make a good guess. During morning meeting we have been answering inferential questions and riddles.
Read-a-loud have begun and students have been exploring character mental state. After listening to Iggy Peck Architect students were asked to build architectural pieces using materials supplied and by working as a team!
Writing
In writing we have begun to explore a new type of text: Non-Fiction. We studied non-fiction books. Students looked at what elements we can find in Non-Fictions books--labels, table of contents, photographs, and digraphs. After students thought about topics they know "All-About." Then we made a Non-Fiction Web--students picked one topic and stated 4 facts they knew about that topic. After planning out our books students began to write their very own Non-Fiction Books!
Math
Students finished up Unit 7-Number composing and Decomposing, by playing games like Make 10! Students rolled diced, moved snowballs to a tens frame and counted up to solve the missing partner to 10.
After finishing up Unit 7, students reviewed some older units. They reviewed out measurement unit--length, height, capacity/volume, and weight. Students also looked at simple addition and subtraction problems. Students were asked to solve problems using only the problem given without a story. We reviewed greater than and less than, by playing WAR. The winner was the person who said the correct sentence regarding their number first. ___is greater than ____, or _______is less than ______.
Phonics
In Phonics, students are working on taping out CVC words. KA has been pushed to use their fingers now instead of their arms. They are excited to be challenged with words such as B-E-L-T...belt, which has four sounds! Students have also begun to use their own magnetic boards to spell CVC words.
IB
Transportation
We love Transportation in KA! This week we looked at different modes of transportation around the world! Students traveled on an airplane and looked at the differences and similarities between modes of transportation around the globe. After which we discussed different terrains require different modes of transportation. Students sorted transportation required for land, water and air into the correct categories. During choice students built their own transportation machines for the stuffies in our classroom.
