Spring 2018
Welcome Spring!
There are only a few months left of this school year and we would like to thank all of our hard working liaisons for their commitment to bringing the arts into education. We hope you have enjoyed the performances this year and are looking forward to new opportunities for next year.
Often we receive questions regarding the purpose of the Arts in Education Program. It may not be as familiar to others as it is to us. This is a good reminder to reflect on the past and talk about the roots of this program.
Arts in Education
Arts in Education programs have long been valued learning experiences in New York State schools. The State's magnificent arts and cultural institutions (museums, libraries, historical sites, performing arts companies, and teaching artists) support and enrich school curriculum across the New York State learning standard areas. Current research demonstrates that integrating the Arts into general education throughout the learning process, in addition to sequential teaching in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, significantly enhances students' cognitive, personal, and social abilities.
Arts in Education programming is an important component of the State Education Department's efforts to raise student achievement for all and close gaps in student performance.
Opera To Go 2018 - The Ugly Duckling
IN SCHOOL PERFORMANCES
In a world where the default forms of entertainment for children are primarily television, video games and the Internet, Opera Saratoga’s Opera-to-Goprogram provides youth with an all-too-rare opportunity to experience the visceral thrill of the live performing arts, up close and personal!
Each year, Opera Saratoga tours an Opera-to-Go production to more than fifty public and private schools throughout the greater Capital and lower Adirondack regions of NY, western Massachusetts, and southern Vermont.
The performances feature charismatic professional artists who love to share their joy of music and theater through the opera, as well as through question and answer sessions where students have the opportunity to meet the artists and learn about the music and what it takes to put on a performance.
Cost: $550 per performance

Adirondack Shakespeare Company
Adirondack Shakespeare Company is dedicated to producing world-class quality theatre that is unburdened by spectacle and technology, but rather focuses on what matters most: the play.
We offer workshops for elementary, middle, high school, and college students. These range from hour-long focused studies to longer intensives in which our actors visit your school for several days. Each course of study can be individually tailored to your curriculum.
Each year, we offer at least one touring production to school groups. These shows are focused around a particular theme and include scenes, monologues, sonnets, and songs from across Shakespeare’s canon. For more info on how to bring ADK Shakespeare to your school, please email us at info@adkshakes.org.

RUTH AND THE GREEN BOOK
Ruth was so excited to take a trip in her family's new car! In the early 1950s, few African Americans could afford to buy cars, so this would be an adventure. But she soon found out that black travelers weren't treated very well in some towns. Many hotels and gas stations refused service to black people. Daddy was upset about something called Jim Crow laws... Finally, a friendly attendant at a gas station showed Ruth's family The Green Book. It listed all of the places that would welcome black travelers. With this guidebook--and the kindness of strangers--Ruth could finally make a safe journey from Chicago to her grandma's house in Alabama. Ruth's story is fiction, but The Green Book and its role in helping a generation of African American travelers avoid some of the indignities of Jim Crow are historical fact.
