The Gower Gazette
Week 8- September 21, 2018
In the Classroom...
This week in reading we focused on non-fiction books and learned about text features. We did this as we learned about Fall. The kids were very excited to discover new facts about this awesome season. Together we created an online poster using Google Slides that highlighted Fall. The kids added photos and captions to this poster. Check it out: http://bit.ly/2O2i3qk. Ask your child what they know about Fall.
In Math we have been working hard on understanding missing addends. The kids have been working through story problems and setting them up into an equation. We've learned many math methods to solve these and have been sharing with our peers which way is the best when working through these problem types. Next week we will be looking at subtraction and how it relates to addition and missing addends.
In Writing, we not only wrote informational writings about Fall, but we talked a lot about nouns. The kids learned that every sentence needs a noun. See if they can tell you what a noun is.
We are still learning about the moon in science and how to be a good citizen in Social Studies. Thanks to Mrs. Tyler and Mrs. Wright for sending in items from our wish list to help with these lessons. We will be using the supplies next week to create some awesome projects about the moon. You can also help out with supplies, just check out the wish list below.
We had a great Skype with Joshua Tree National Park on Wednesday. The kids learned about animal and plant adaptations in the desert. The park ranger was super and shared a lot of info with us and we even got to see a coyote pelt and turtle shell. I hope your child told you all about it!
We do have Saturday school tomorrow. I will not be here as I had plans to go out of town prior to the make up day being scheduled. Please call the school tomorrow if you need to get in contact. I will not be on Class Dojo. The kids NEED to bring a snack to school tomorrow, not a lunch. Breakfast nor lunch is served on Saturday school. Please be sure that your child as eaten before coming and has a snack to hold them over till 12:40. We are also celebrating Dot Day. The first grade team has a lot of fun activities planned for the kids. Make sure your child comes decked out in DOTS. The student who does wins a prize!!!
I hope you all have a great weekend. I am headed to the mountains to get fresh apples from the Apple Orchard for Apple Week Next week. Again, please see the wish list below for items we will need for this fun week.
Take Care,
Ms. Gower
