Hudson Hawk Band Updates

Week of 2/14/2022

A lot of the information in this Smore is repeated from last week. Make sure to fill out the linked Spring Trip Chaperone Interest form if you would like to attend the trip with us. Mr. Urban and I had a great time at the TMEA convention last week. We are returning this week invigorated and with new ideas to implement to continue helping our students grow and thrive!

We have heard good things about the student-led rehearsals as well. I hope the students enjoyed the opportunity to lead the class. We intend to do more of that in the future - it is such a great learning opportunity!

I hope you all have a wonderful week and a happy Valentine's Day. I hope to see you at the booster club meeting on Tuesday night.

Booster Club Meeting

Tuesday, Feb. 15th, 7pm

4405 Hudson Drive

Sachse, TX

We will have our monthly booster club meeting in the band hall on February 15th at 7:00pm. The board will meet at 6pm and then parents are invited to join us at 7pm to learn more about upcoming events, volunteer to help with upcoming events, and ask any questions. We hope to see you there! The spring semester is pretty packed with activities and we would love to have a ton of parent support!

Band Rehearsals During Intersession

We will be holding band rehearsals and open practice/help times for all band students during the week of the Spring Intersession (March 7-11).

Daily Rehearsal Schedule

9-10:30am - Honors Band rehearsal

10:30am-12:00pm - Beginner Band & Symphonic Band practice time/help sessions

1-3pm - Wind Symphony rehearsal

If you will be in town, PLEASE make arrangements to join us for these rehearsals and practice sessions. You do NOT have to be signed up for the intersession to attend the band rehearsals. We will use the back band hall door (#11) for pickup and drop-off during that week.

Spring Trip Contracts Due THIS WEDNESDAY

This year we will be attending the Music Across Texas festival at Pinstack in Allen on Friday, May 20. The trip will cost a total of $27 and is not covered by band fees - it is an optional trip. We were able to discount the trip significantly due to the great fundraiser we had in the fall! Students have received a TRIP CONTRACT in band class and it must be returned with a $10 deposit to save their spot on the trip by Wednesday, February 16. Students who raised $150+ at the Practice-a-Thon in October must submit their trip contract, but do not need to send payment. A list of the Spring Trip earners can be found here.

There will be a maximum of 16 chaperone spots (chaperone cost is $12) and the spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis by filling out the CHAPERONE INTEREST FORM at this link.

HOODIES ARE HERE!!!

The hoodies have been delivered and handed out to students who have paid for their hoodie already. Please send payment (cash, checks made out to Hudson Band Boosters, or Paypal through Charms) so your student can bring their hoodie home. Thanks to all who ordered! Once all who pre-ordered have picked up, we will sell the extras we have to those who missed the first order period.

Advanced Band Solo & Ensemble Contest - PERFORMANCE TIMES LINKED

Saturday, Feb. 19th, 8am

Austin Academy for Excellence

All eligible Symphonic, Honors, and Wind Symphony students will perform a solo (and some will also perform an ensemble) on Saturday, February 19. They will dress up nicely and perform for a judge with a piano accompanist. A portion of their score comes from physical presentation so the nicer they dress, the better!

Solo & Ensemble Contest Performance Schedule

We have begun piano rehearsals already and they continue this week and next. Please see this link for the piano rehearsal schedule (TAKE NOTE OF THE 3 TABS AT THE BOTTOM) which takes place before school or during class. A portion of each student's band fees pays for the accompanist rehearsals and the performance on the 19th.

Students who do not appear on the list have been spoken with already. If you have any questions about the status of a student's piano rehearsals or eligibility for the Solo & Ensemble Contest, please let us know.

Percussion & Makeup Advanced Band Solo Contest

All beginner, Symphonic, and Honors band PERCUSSIONISTS as well as all advanced band woodwind and brass students who were ineligible to attend the first solo contest (or had an unavoidable conflict that was discussed IN ADVANCE) will perform their solos for a judge after school on Tuesday, March 1 at Hudson Middle School. They will need to dress up for their performance and will receive a rating based on their performance and presentation. Specific performance times will be sent next week.

If you have questions about whether or not your student is involved, please let us know.

All Beginner Band students will have a solo contest on May 7 - don't worry, your time is coming! :)

REMINDER - Winter 50 Day Challenge Ends THIS WEEK!

Students received a new practice challenge just before we left for the winter break. It challenges them to practice for 50 days before February 19. They will be invited to a before school donut party and an after school game party if they complete the challenge.

Winter 50 Day Practice Challenge Tracker

(MUST BE TURNED IN BY FEB. 22 AND MUST BE SIGNED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN - NO EXCEPTIONS!)

FINAL DATE CHANGE - Pre-UIL Showcase Concert

Thursday, March 3rd, 6pm

3901 Miles Road

Sachse, TX

Honors Band and Wind Symphony students will perform their UIL pieces for parents in the auditorium at Sachse HS. After the stage performance we will transition to the band hall so parents can see us work through the sightreading procedure.

What Should We Be Practicing?

Practicing should happen daily to help build coordination and muscle memory and retain progress. Students should practice sitting in a real chair (preferably one that doesn't roll/spin), using a music stand, with a metronome. Please make sure woodwind players are properly swabbing out their instrument at the end of every practice session to keep their instruments clean!

Charms Logins

Please take a moment this week to login to your student's Charms account. Make sure to login as a Parent/Student/Member. You will need to use hudsonsoundmachine as the school code. Student passwords should be either just the 6-digit ID number (for first time logins), sID# (that students are used to), or something different you or your student has chosen. If you need help resetting a password, please let me know. When you ask for a password to be reset, I will change it to CAPITALIZED first and last initial followed by student ID# (ex. HB123456).

After logging in, you can see payments due in the financial tab, make changes to personal information, see uniform parts that have been checked out, school-owned instrument information, and more.

As a reminder from last week, spring band fees are due February 4. If you have a financial hardship, please communicate that with us so we can help!

Using the Charms System for Band

Are You Handy? Like to Build Things?

I have grand visions of organizing our percussion storage room over the next few weeks because it's too small and we have too much equipment. If you happen to be handy and want to help build shelves for our cymbals, drum pads, and drum stands, please let me know! This picture is similar to what I have in mind.

Instrument Usage Fees in Skyward

If your student plays a school-owned instrument (oboe, bassoon, tenor/bari sax, French horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and select others), their district school-owned instrument usage fee is reflected in their Skyward account now. These directions to submit an online payment in Skyward should help you with completing that payment. Please let Mrs. Becker know if you have questions.
