WE ARE HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

* November 9th, 2020 *

Letter from the Principal

Dear Celtic Families and Friends,

Last week we celebrated a number of successes: our Cross Country team went to the State TAPPS Meet and placed in the Top 10; we delivered over 2000lbs of food to St.Vincent de Paul's Food Pantry; we held our first Divine Mercy Chaplet of the year; we held our first Pep Rally of the year; we celebrated Senior Night for Cheer, Cross Country, and Football athletes; and we walloped our opponents in our Friday Night Lights game.

But most importantly, we brought the last hybrid group of students into full in-person school, which means HT is back to being a full-time school. While we continue to welcome and offer the full Distance Learning option for those families with specific needs during the Covid crisis, we continue to comply with the State-wide mandate for masks which we require at all times in school. While countries around the globe are returning to full lock downs, we are fortunate to have the option to continue with the business of daily life that wearing masks allows. The choice each student and faculty and staff member makes each day to comply with the mask mandate is what makes our In-person school possible.

There's a lot going on this week too! Our Journalism class presents the first edition of this year's Trinity Times (see link below). And students will be focusing on getting their in-school routine fine-tuned, all the while adding clubs and meetings back into their planning. We will honor our Veterans on Wednesday, and on Thursday our Drama students will perform their thought-provoking One-Act play for the students ahead of taking it to the TAPPS State competition next week. Football presses on with its season, while Soccer and Basketball are just getting theirs under way.

School is getting back to normal, with boring days and fun days, too much homework days and exciting lunch-time basketball days, Mass attire days and Spirit Wear days. Through all these ups and downs that is normal school, we go forward thankful and confident that God holds the HT community safely in the palm of His hands.

VIRTUE OF THE WEEK: RESPECT

The virtue of Respect is aligned with the Cardinal virtue of Justice.

DEFINITION OF RESPECT

Speaking and acting according to our own and others’ rights, status, and circumstances.

RESPECT LOOKS LIKE:

  • Only saying nice things about your siblings and classmates
  • Not laughing at others
  • Listening the first time and discontinuing an action when someone asks you to stop
  • Kissing a crucifix
  • Listening attentively to others

RESPECT SOUNDS LIKE:

  • He is really good at….
  • It is not nice to laugh at people.
  • Silence I will stop doing that.
  • Silence

Virtue Video - Prepare yourself for some Aretha Franklin, the virtue this week is R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

The weekly Virtue Video will be posted here shortly. Please check back soon to view it.

If you missed last week's Virtue Video on Prayerfulness, you can watch it here:

Virtue of the Week - Prayerfulness

What are the Christian Virtues?

What are the virtues of Christianity? A virtue is the habit of doing good, making it easy and delightful. A virtuous person is free! The Christian virtues give us freedom from being overpowered by temptations and our vices. Everyone is born with a capacity for virtue, but we need education and practice to attain the freedom, harmony, and balance of the virtuous, excellent human being. God gives us the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. These virtues adapt our finite human faculties for participation in the divine life, to be in relationship with God. The theological virtues infuse and give life to the four Cardinal virtues.

Monday our Cross Country Varsity teams competed in the TAPPS State 3A competition.

A message from HT's Cross Country Coach, John Warnes:

We had a long and crazy season, starting with being moved up to 3A over the summer, then having to move the season back because of Covid, then having to cancel and/or reschedule a number of meets also because of Covid. But even with all that we had a great cross country season!

The Varsity girls finished in the top 4 at every meet, led by the freshman Kate Boone and seniors Abby Rockwood and Carisa Torralva, and the rest of the lady Celtics.

We finished the season off on a great note for the year. The Varsity girls finished 4th in the State, and freshman Kate Boone placed 5th in State!

The varsity boys were led by juniors Bruce Reed and Nathan Orf, and freshman Joseph Jolly. They ran strong all season, always placing in the top 20.

And at the State meet Nathan Orf cracked the top 10 by finishing 9th in State.

I am so very proud of all these boys and girls! We are a young team and only going to get better.

Assistant Coach Boone and I thank you for all your support.

We welcomed back students who'd been in DL since the start of the year

Junior Jaewon J. and senior Daniel J. had gone home to South Korea for the summer but could not return due to travel restrictions. Thankfully, they were able to keep up with school as A-Synchronous Distance Learners, although to their credit they tried to be synchronous, ie: logging in at the same time as their Texas classmates - but this often meant class at 2 or 3 in the morning Korean time! They were real troopers though and made it through. They were finally able to fly back recently and have jumped right in to our HT routine. We're so glad you're back Jaewon and Daniel!

Blue Mass day with Fr. John Guzaldo

Fr. John pointed out to us that life is a balance of obligations and perks. And that it's natural to look for the perks. And indeed, Fr. John explained that when Jesus calls people to be His disciples, He promises perks to them - not earthly perks, because there is suffering, but heavenly perks - whatever God calls you to, that's what you'll be most happy doing. Fr. John answered His call and told us he "Loves his life!". He said he's never experienced what most adults experience: loneliness and boredom. He loves his life and he loves the Church. He is fascinated by her and is in constant discovery mode of what the Lord has in store for us. He understands now the privilege of following Jesus. He understands more profoundly what happens on the altar. And Fr. John has discovered that in accepting to follow Jesus, he has found himself. He is grateful for the perks of a life of discipleship. Fr. John assured the students that if they follow the call of a life of faith, the best perks in life are yet to come.

Big picture

November 3rd, 2020

Holy Trinity Catholic High School is proud to announce that senior Rachel Heifrin has been named a Commended Student in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to this scholastically talented senior after Mass on Tuesday, November 3rd, in the Kasberg Center at Holy Trinity.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nations. We hope this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Please join Holy Trinity in congratulating Rachel on her outstanding achievement.

Gold Day Mass with Fr. Kurtis

Fr. Kurtis spoke to the students about Saint Charles Borromeo, whose feast day it was. He explained that St. Borromeo was critical in establishing the structure of studies for the priesthood, and in particular worked to standardize the formation of men to the priesthood through education in the seminary. The profound impact Fr. Charles Borromeo had on the education for men called to the priesthood is one Fr. Kurtis knows well. Study in the seminary generally requires a four year university degree in philosophy, followed by an additional four years for a master's degree in theology. Then the seminarian must complete one year of service in a parish, like an internship. In all it represents a minimum of 9 years of study. Fr. Kurtis told us he went the extra long route and took 14 years, and so that when he was ordained, he had a fuller and more complete understanding of the call to the priesthood. He thanks Fr. Charles Borromeo for establishing the standards for the formation to the priesthood. Fr. Kurtis once told us of a detail of his early childhood in which he played Mass outside with his friends and he would use Doritos to mimic Communion. Even as a child, Fr. Kurtis had that sincere response to God's calling to the priesthood, and for that we are so grateful. We are especially grateful that he shares the fascinating details of Church history with us and offers us glimpses into the lives of those who make up the 2000 years of the Catholic Church.

Thank you to all who serve and who through their ministry enable us to celebrate Mass each week!

Divine Mercy Chaplet in the HT Gym

Due to the need for more social distancing space, HT students and staff gathered in the HT gym on Thursday to recite the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Normally we all squeeze into the Fr. Charles Davis Chapel - but with covid, that's obviously not an option. But the bleachers worked, and with the lights off and natural light flooding the gym instead, the gym became a place of quiet reverence. Junior Andrew L. accompanied the students in the Divine Mercy melody while seniors Chrysanthe N. and Cate B. led the students in song.

Much to the delight of the Columba teacher sponsors, Mrs. Newman and Mrs. Kelley, Columba students brought in the most in terms of overall weight donations. But truth be told, all our families went above and beyond! Overall we collected 2380 lbs!

In the Halls of Holy Trinity

The Amazing HT Celtic Gym!

Our Holy Trinity Celtic gym is an amazingly versatile space. Not only do we host enthusiastic volleyball and basketball games there, we've also used it for our celebrations, such as our Halloween Costume Contest last week, or our Community Days earlier in the year. Now we've added its daily use as the morning gathering space and the noontime lunch room, which allows students to spread out between the KC and the gym to allow for a more socially distanced lunch. This makes for awesome mid-day games of 'masketball' - basketball with masks - who knew there was such a thing! And in the evenings of course, it's the central location for all our athletes, as they go in and out of the gym and the locker rooms and really use the gym as their home base. And we never forget that it's also where we now gather for our socially distanced Friday Eucharistic Adoration.

What a blessing to have such a wonderful space where all our students get to experience spiritual and physical growth and a true sense of being "home"!

This week it again showed its role as an essential part of Holy Trinity life. On Thursday, we held our very soulful Divine Mercy Chaplet in the gym; we gathered there again for our Friday Eucharistic Adoration. And then to end our week we held an enthusiastic and school-spirit lifting Pep Rally in support of our home Football game against RR Concordia!

HT's New TAPPS E-Sports Team - first meeting Wed. 11.11.2020 4pm in the Computer Lab

Big picture

Why E-Sports?

Community

Video games are a passion for millions of students around the world.

Engaging with their passion through esports is a fantastic way to reach students in a space they want to be, while rewarding positive behaviors and skill development. It encourages them to form social bonds and find community while pursuing something they care about.

STEM Engagement

STEM-related skills are crucial to any esports athlete: deep engagement with computer technology, statistical analysis for scouting, and strategizing pre-match and mid-match.

Conceptual Thinking

Winning demands not only superior execution but superior strategizing. Defeating an opponent requires quick, conceptual thinking and creative problem solving. PlayVS helps students sharpen these skills in a fun, supervised environment.

Teamwork

Every game PlayVS offers is team-based. Success demands strong, clear communication skills — something highly sought after by every employer.

Sportsmanship

Competition means sometimes you lose. Learning to deal with failure, particularly when emotions may be running high, teaches students one of life’s most valuable lessons — how to get back up.

Scholarships

Currently, hundreds of colleges and universities offer tens of millions of dollars in E-sports scholarship money. That number grows substantially every year as more and more schools spin up E-sports programs.

Protocols for athletic games

Please be aware that our Athletic Director, Coach Shelton, is working hard to keep all our athletes and supporters safe during home and away games. Attached are protocols that he is enforcing for our HOME Football games, and for our HOME Volleball games.

If you are planning on attending any of our games, please take the time to familiarize yourselves with our protocols so that you know what to expect when you attend a game.

Please note that likewise, games held 'away' will be subject to similar protocols that we, as guests of the hosting school, will require our athletes, coaches, and attending parents to respect and adhere to. The Holy Trinity Home Game Protocols are posted on our website and you can access them by clicking on the links below.
