What's the Word Hummingbird?

The importance of word recognition & fluency: By Mitu Bagchi

Word Recognition is Fundamental: READ, READ, READ!

Word recognition is learning real words, not just being able to decode nonsense words. This skill is critical for students with disabilities so that it may give them a better chance to comprehend material instead of concentrating on decoding alone.

Direct instruction (DI) is the only way to teach word recognition to students with SLD.

Assessments need to be administered to establish a baseline for student performance. They may include

A) Easy cbm: a nationally normed test

B) Informal Reading Inventory (IRI)

C) Tests of achievement such as the Weschler Individual Achievement Test
