Community, Collaboration and Partnerships

Westside Counseling and WHS West Campus hosted a job fair Tuesday, bringing in industry experts from several career areas to engage with our students! The businesses were very grateful for the opportunity to interact with our students and have asked to be invited back to our next event. This was also beneficial to our students, one who has already been asked to come in for an interview!

From Assistant Principal Ericka Payton: "We had one student say he now has dreams of working and traveling the world with the trucking company. Another female student thought she was too petite to be a firefighter and thought she needed a college degree for it, but is now excited at the thought of pursuing this career at 19."

Preparing all students for all industries that want and need talented, prepared employees. #WeAreWestside!

Finance, Safety and Infrastructure

“You never get a second chance to make a great impression.” Michael Staenberg (Westside High, Class of ’72)

Westside High School finds great pride in being a welcoming and inclusive community for all students, staff members and guests. When alumnus Michael Staenberg returned to his alma mater, he asked to contribute to the welcoming aura he always felt by investing in an updated look for the main entry space and essential hallways. As part of a commitment to both student well-being and district infrastructure, the Westside Foundation and Mr. Staenberg initiated the Heart of Westside Renovation Project, funding aesthetic and functional upgrades throughout Westside High School, without the use of any taxpayer dollars.

Thanks to Mr. Staenberg’s generosity, we have the opportunity for a truly great impression on all who enter the main foyer of our building. This area, as well as spaces by the auditorium, the school store, the cafeteria, the main gym and major hallway arteries, are the heaviest traveled sections of our school and visible to the most people. Thanks to the investment from Mr. Staenberg to the Westside Foundation, these areas have new flooring, lighting, paneling and more. That first impression is now one of structural and artistic excellence, mirroring the excellence we see in other aspects of the Westside Community School district.'

“Westside took an interest in me and I owe a lot of my success to Westside High School,” said Staenberg, an internationally respected developer and entrepreneur who attended Hillside Elementary, Westbrook Junior High and Westside High School. “Westside made me understand the value of school, the value of people, and how to be successful in career and in giving back.”

Westside is one of many beneficiaries of Mr. Staenberg’s generosity, topping $250 million in donations worldwide. Through the Staenberg Family Foundation, Staenberg and his wife Carol support organizations and causes in the same communities they help thrive through real estate. This generous donation for the Heart of Westside Renovation Project will benefit students, teachers, staff and guests for years to come.

“I’m just paying the success forward,” said Staenberg. “I hope the students and teachers truly appreciate what they have right here in this great school.”

Supported and Engaged Staff

At least 13 of our 2022 Westside High graduates plan to pursue Education.. and we want them to teach at Westside! As part of our Strategic Plan and our 'Growing Our Own' initiative, Westside Human Resources, great programs like Education Rising and our Intro to Education curriculum, we hope to mentor and encourage Class of 2022 graduates like Dylan McKee to begin their careers at Westside Community Schools once they earn their degrees. Dylan spent the last year student teaching each week in Mary Morris's 3rd grade classroom at Westgate Elementary! From Mrs. Morris: "I am so excited for his future! He will be a fantastic educator and I hope he returns to Westside!"

We do, too!

Brett Williams is a 5th grade teacher at Oakdale Elementary in District 66. He's also an assistant Football and Track Coach at Westside High School. Brett and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of Zane (known to many as Z-Man). They reside in Elkhorn, Nebraska and, when Zane is healthy enough to do so, he attends Elkhorn South High School where he is a Senior. Since birth Zane has endured debilitating medical issues too onerous and numerous to count. In addition to the full time care that Jennifer provides Zane, these infirmities require medical care and professional assistance 24/7.

Zane has been tube-fed and confined to a wheelchair his entire life. He is nonverbal but can communicate via email and text. Zane has endured innumerable surgeries and extended hospital stays throughout his life. At great personal expense the Williams have had to invest in adaptive medical equipment in their home so that they and the professionals who care for Zane can do so safely and effectively. There is never a respite from the time and attention that it takes for Brett and Jennifer to keep Zane alive, let alone relatively healthy.

Due to some very unfortunate circumstances largely beyond their control, the Williams find themselves in a financial predicament beyond their personal means. Without assistance, the Williams' family is in jeopardy of losing their home which is critical to Zane's ongoing care.
