Violence

Against Women in India

Purpose of Project

Just as the racism and discrimination was a social injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird, the violence women in India experience at the hands of men is an injustice of monumental size. As we have read in the novel, racism is at times blatant; but even more disturbing is the subtle kind, disguised as classism and the turning of a blind eye to discrimination of other human beings. In India, the rape, sexual assault, and abuse women endure everyday are excepted as a normal part of life, and many are ignored or not reported. In the last 28 years, the number of reported rape cases has doubled in India, with a high number unreported in mostly rural areas due to social stigma. It is estimated that a woman is raped every 20 minutes.

Modern Day "Mockingbirds"

Violence against women is violence that is inflicted on a woman for only the fact that she is a woman. Gender terrorism targets women regardless of race or age. No matter what background, all women fear sexual violence. Millions are raped, beaten, stalked, and sexually harassed each year in places where they should not have to fear for their lives. In one poll of Indian men, 20% of men have forced partners to have sex, and 25% of men in India have admitted to acts of sexual violence.

Social Context: "The Disease"

The violence and taking of power that makes up the act of rape is a physical reflection of the inequality and injustice women suffer day to day. Gender inequality and the failure of governments and societies to recognize human rights of women contribute to this, and domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape, sexual assault, harassment, trafficking of women, forced prostitution, and harmful social practices are all major consequences.

Becoming Atticus Finch

A base needs to be established in India, to work with local women towards empowerment, rehabilitation, and understanding self defence and legal rights. The US needs to pressure Indian courts to make rape and assault cases a priority, and to update the laws regarding them.
