The Lion's Roar
From the Principal:
This week, you may not see me around campus as much. That's because I had surgery on my knee last Thursday. The doctor said I could come back to work, but I need to remain seated at my desk with the repaired knee elevated. Please feel free to stop by with questions, ideas, or just to say hello! Our dedicated and very capable Assistant Principal, Ms. Laurie Whitmore, will be out and around campus to address any needs of which I am unable to attend due to my current lack of mobility.
Many of our team will be participating in professional development during the summer break as part of our ongoing efforts to provide our students with the most effective, current, and research-based learning experience possible. Starting June 6th, a team of teachers and I will be attending a week-long training on the Orton-Gillingham multisensory approach to teaching reading skills, which is an evidence-based method of instruction in which the connections between letters and sounds are explicitly taught. Ms. Whitmore and I will then travel to Nashville in mid-June for a conference focusing on Conscious Discipline, a brain research-based approach to managing student behavior through integration of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), class discipline, and school culture. In July, Ms. Whitmore and I will take another team of teachers to a conference in Sacramento about building and sustaining Professional Learning Communities - the process by which teams of teachers meet regularly to improve teaching skills and students' academic performance.
Over the summer, you will receive information about next school year, including your child's new teacher. Your first opportunity to meet and talk with your child's new teacher will be at Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 9th from 5 to 6 PM. This year, Back to School Night is a couple days before the first day of school, which is August 11th.
Finally, I want to take this moment to express my sincere appreciation to all the students, families, and staff members who welcomed me into the Lion Pride family back when I joined you all back in November. It is truly an honor and privilege to serve as your principal and I am looking forward to what we are going to achieve and accomplish during the years ahead.
Wishing you a restful and enjoyable summer, and we will see you in August!
