The Elk Call
10/3/16
Principal's Message
Thanks to all the parents and students that attended "Meet the Teacher" night last Monday. Along with teachers and classrooms being available, we provided support for Skyward access for parents. This is a great way for parents to monitor their child's grades and absences. If you need help with this, do not hesitate to give us a call.
In our 9th and 10th grade parent meeting, we discussed the benefits of taking advanced courses at BHS. There are multiple opportunities for students to take advanced courses and these classes are doing some amazing things. One example of this is the HONORS COHORT at BHS. The Honor Cohort is for 9th graders enrolled in 4 advanced courses- PreAP Geometry, PreAP English 1, PreAP Biology, and AP Human Geography. These students are grouped together in classes and were each issued a Chromebook so they can use technology everyday.
Let's have a great week!

Students at Burleson High School have a great tool at their fingertips. Career Cruising is a service that allows students to research career options, interests, colleges/universities and much, much more. While many of our students will be using Career Cruising in the classroom, we strongly encourage students sit down with their parents/guardians and look over this great resource. This is a great place to start looking at your options for careers!

AVID Staff Spotlight
Lona Davis
Lona Davis teaches 12th grade Government & Economics and junior and senior AP Psychology. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX and the University of Texas at Arlington. Mrs. Davis has a B.A. in History and a Master’s Degree in Gifted Education. While in college, she worked on campus in the Political Science department and waited tables at the Monument Cafe off campus. Mrs. Davis was also involved with the honor society in History. Her favorite college memory was hanging out with friends, hiking all over the Austin area, and swimming at the Blue Hole. When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you have applied to your personal and professional life?” she replied, “time management, how to study/read well, and networking”. We asked Mrs. Davis, “What advice would you give young people who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” and she said, “Earning a degree is something that no one can ever take away from you, so make sure that you go to class and do the reading!”
If you have any questions about getting a degree in History or just have questions about The University of Texas at Arlington or Southwestern University in Georgetown, drop by room 125. Mrs. Lona Davis would be happy to help!
