Principal's Message
“Strong ships were not built for calm seas…”
I recently came across this quote and it holds true. Hays High School is a strong ship, and we will together, with our parents, students and staff weather this sea of uncertainty. A lot of it starts with our attitude. As parents and educators, we must model what we expect to see in our students. One of the most important things we can model (especially right now) is the ability to be flexible and think differently. As we all know, things won’t be as they always have been for the 2020-21 school year. Together we must think differently and understand that flexibility will get us through this. The sea may be choppy right now, but it will pass and our ship will survive because together we are stronger. If you have questions, or have concerns about the upcoming year, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Many of you have reached out to me regarding what our school day will look like starting September 28 when we begin “in person learning.” While our plans could change, depending on the COVID-19 situation, I wanted to give you more information on what “in person” learning will look like at Hays High School. I understand many of you would want as much information as possible before you select “in person” or “home” learning for your student(s)
When we resume “in person” learning on September 28 at Hays High School:
Students will have a 7 period schedule and change classes about every 50 minutes
We will have multiple lunch periods to spread out students for safety reasons
Students will have the option to eat lunch outside
Students will report directly to 1st period upon arrival (no hanging out in hallways, etc.)
New hallway traffic patterns have been developed to include one way hallways, designated up/down stairwells, etc. The Intent is to limit contact & reduce crowding
Student restroom capacity will be adjusted to allow spacing
Anyone on campus will be required to wear a mask
We are eliminating shared consumable individual supplies in art, CTE and other classes. Some classes may require students to bring their own supplies.
Students will be placed apart in classrooms to the greatest extent possible (3ft. or 6 ft.)
Sanitization will take place multiple times during the day of cafeteria tables, desks, and other common areas.
Dismissal times will be staggered by a few minutes to allow fewer kids in the building at a time trying to exit through the same exits.
Safety is our number one priority, we will do our best everyday using the current guidance from local and state health professionals and our Hays CISD safety team. We ask that you make your choice by August 18th.

Class of 2021 (Senior) Scholastic Achievement Test- October 14 2020
This year all seniors will take the SAT free of charge, during the school day at Hays High School. This is an incredible opportunity for your student. At this time, there is not an online opportunity for this test. As we get closer, we will push information out to our seniors and their parents. Even though some colleges have “waived” the SAT requirement for admissions, the SAT is still going to be used for scholarship decisions. Our recommendation is that no matter what college your student may be attending that you take the exam with us on October 14.

Tryouts start on the 20th and we are all very eager to see who will be representing our varsity team this year. All players have been working very hard during practice in order to secure a win for our first match on September 8th against the San Marcos Rattlers.

Senior Yearbook Photo Update
Thank you to those who have reached out regarding senior yearbook photos. This is a special moment for your student and family and we want to help make it the best it can be. Currently, all the August 17-20 time slots have been filled. We are working with our photo vendor (Lifetouch) to add additional time slots at Hays HS. We know with almost 800 seniors this year, we will be adding multiple time slots. So if you could not get one this time around...don’t panic!!
