Soaring Over MDE
8/12/2022
WELCOME BACK
WOW! What an amazing start to the school year! I would like to send a huge thank you to everyone that showed up for our meet and greet! This was our first year doing this and I know it will not be our last! Jenni Crisp and her crew did a phenomenal job organizing and carrying out the plan. It was so fabulous to see over 400 families on campus!
Over the first two days a few areas of concern have popped up.
- Footwear. Please do not send your child to school in shoes with high stacked soles/heels, open-toed shoes, flip-flops, sandals, or shoes with wheels. (MDUSD BP/AR 5132.)
- Toys on campus. While I certainly understand the need and want to bring toys to show friends at school, this also creates quite a distraction. Unless there is a preapproval with the classroom teacher (ie; star student, sharing day, or fidget approval) toys need to be left at home. This will also help prevent items from being broken, lost, stolen, etc.
- Phones and Smart Watches: Please remember that your child is in school learning. Texting them or sending a message to their watch disrupts the class and their learning environment. This quickly becomes the focus for the student and those around them. If you need a message given to your child, please call the office. We will get the message to them in a timely manner.
ON Monday, 8/15, we are asking all students and staff to wear a sports jersey. This is in solidarity with the Clayton community in honoring the life of MDE former student, Braden Fahey.
Sincerely,
Katie Sanchez
New Drop-Off Procedures for Students
On Monday, 8/15, we will be starting our walk 'n' talk again. Students should be the only participants of the walk 'n' talk. Students going to the lower playground will do their hugs and kisses at the gate between room 6 & 7. Upper playground drop off should occur at the picnic tables.
Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grades
Drop-Off: When your student heads out to the lower playground, they are to put their backpacks by their teacher's cone and participate in the Walk 'n' Talk that will be occurring. Students will walk around the cones talking with their peers. When the bell rings, they will walk to their "line-up" location, which will be where their backpack was left.
Howisey's 2nd graders, 3rd-5th Grades
Drop-Off: When your student heads out to the upper playground, they are to keep their backpacks on and participate in the Walk 'n' Talk that will be occurring. Students will walk around the cones talking with their peers. When the bell rings, they will walk to their "line-up" location and wait for their teacher.
TK/Kindergarten Pick-up
We are still trying to rework our pick up procedures now that our kindergarten classes are in a different location. A few things we would like to make note of:
- When you are picking up your tk or kinder student, please pick up your student and proceed off campus.
- Stopping and talking with friends or other parents while still on campus is very distracting to our students that are still learning.
- Please also refrain from trying to locate your older student. Students are at lunch or going to different classes.
- Our staff keeps the safety of our students at the forefront of everything and seeing adults approaching students with no visitor's badge on is quite alarming.
Pick-Up 1st Grade-5th Grade
School gets out at 2:35. Please do not enter the campus until 2:33. Learning is still taking place and when students (of all ages) see their loved ones outside, it take away from what is happening inside the classroom.
2:35 pick-up
When picking up your child, please DO NOT LEAVE your car unattended in the car line. There will be adults out front helping students get into their cars. The lane of traffic that runs parallel to our car line must continue to be a thoroughfare. (No stopping, no calling your child to walk through the car line, etc.)
As a reminder, parking in a staff parking spot is not permitted. The hashed out location between the principal's parking space and the staff spot is also not a parking spot. Please refrain from parking in the marked daycare spots.
Food Reminders:
We do have "NUT FREE" tables available at lunch and snack. Many of our classrooms are also nut free. We are trying to limit the amount of eating in classrooms, due to allergies, ants, and the mess that comes from eating. Eating will take place outside. We have plenty of picnic tables around the school for students to eat. All classes have been assigned tables to eat at.
As a reminder we will not be allowing food to be brought into school for birthdays. Check with your teacher on what the class may need or donate a book to be read and kept in the classroom.
We also have hand sanitizer on each of the table groups and a portable hand sanitizer station right by the custodian closets.
If your student is absent...
Please ONLY contact our Attendance Secretary, Misty Kirk-Nimr at kirknimrm@mdusd.org OR call 925-672-4840 x84502. Parent Square messages are not making it to Misty. If you have questions regarding returning to school after your child has been sick, please contact Misty as welll. Telling your child's teacher is not enough. Misty or our office staff must speak to a parent or guardian .
