SHISD Mid-Week Message
Promoting Great Things in a Great School District
Happy New Year!
The new year always brings new hopes, new goals and new excitement. We had a tremendous year in Panther Nation in 2016 and 2017 is set up to bring even more success.
This year Spring Hill ISD will look to create a plan for a district of innovation, continue our run of Academic UIL dominance, and compete in Robotics. The spring semester will also bring the band concert season, one-act play, soccer, baseball, softball, track, golf and tennis.
The spring semester also brings the testing season and the state-released new A-F ratings to become official in 2018. The good news is that no matter what challenges the state throws our way, SHISD teachers and students always rise to the occasion.
We will continue to walk the talk of our vision to be a premier school district and we will continue to set the standard for excellence in the academics, athletics, and service.
With great pride,
Steve Snell, Superintendent
Kudos
- Kudos to Roger Askew for making sure traffic ran smoothly during the latest cold front.-ss
- My daughter's Christmas party was so organized and everything went so smoothly. I could not believe it. I was expecting to have to wait in a long line to get checked in, then fight the crowd to get to her room. I was very impressed. Way to go SH!!! -SH Parent
- Kudos to the business office and Mrs. Benton for working so diligently to get the recruitment and retention stipends out in December. -ss
District of Innovation
Potential benefits of becoming a District of Innovation include:
- Local control: Districts decide which flexibilities best suit their local needs.
- Customization: Districts can create an innovation plan for a level of school (e.g., only high schools), grade level, or a single campus.
- Autonomy: Districts must submit a District of Innovation plan to the commissioner of education, but approval is not required.
- Flexibility: Districts will have the flexibility to implement practices similar to charter schools, including exemptions from mandates such as: school start calendar, 90% attendance rule, class-size ratios, site-based decision-making processes, certain student discipline provisions, use of planning and preparation periods, teacher appraisal requirements

TASB School Board Leadership Training
Local Trustee Participates in Leadership Program (Austin)
Karen Wright, trustee from Spring Hill ISD joined 34 other school board members from across Texas November 17-19 at the second session of the Leadership TASB class of 2017. Selected by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the group is participating in a yearlong education leadership study program. These trustees represent school districts of all sizes, with student populations of 1,000 to 159,000, and reflect a similar range of property wealth.
Participants who complete all required elements of the study will graduate next year by earning Master Trustee status. This is the highest designation recognized by TASB.
Meeting in San Antonio, the trustees heard featured speaker Mark Elberfeld, president of the Gabriel Center for Servant-Leadership in Atlanta, GA. Elberfeld is a recognized authority on leadership training and focused on characteristics of leaders as servants. This was the first of three sessions on servant leadership in which the class will participate. The class also visited Uvalde CISD and Knippa ISD to learn about innovative programs and the board’s role in student success.
Other Leadership TASB sessions are scheduled , February 16-18; McAllen, April 20-22; and Fort Worth, June 22-24. Each session has a unique theme that builds on the previous session and features nationally recognized experts in the fields of leadership development and education. Teams also work throughout the year on extended learning assignments between meetings. Created in 1993, Leadership TASB has more than 800 graduates to date.
TASB is a voluntary, nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 5.3 million public school students.
