7th Grade PBL
PBL:
This years 7th grade Project Based Learning (PBL) unit, will center around the essential question: How does sustainability affect our past, present, & future? Students will be able to exam this question through an environmental lens or through an economic or social lens. In March, 7th graders will start this unit by looking at, “ what is sustainability?” Students will research and write about sustainability within various topic areas of their choice in English class. Students will share their discoveries with their classmates through speeches. After sharing these various aspects of sustainability with others, students will develop a tangible, sustainable, realistic and authentic project, which will be presented to the community. The goals of this unit will be: what does sustainability mean, how does it relate to me, and how can I change this or apply it to my community? Students will hopefully continue working on their projects long term or implement a change within our community. Students will do a bulk of their work during the first part of April following a modified schedule on April 3, 4, 8, 9, and 10 with the culminating event on Thursday, April 11. As they delve into this work, we will have more details for parents about the end event. We look forward to this learning opportunity for our seventh graders.

Naples Robotics Team -- FIRST Team 1551
The Naples Robotics Team -- FIRST Team 1551 -- is nearing the end of the 2019 build season and is entering competition season. This year's space-themed game sees two alliances of three robots each racing to store and secure cargo onto rockets in-between sandstorms on a hostile alien world. You can see the game animation at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mew6G_og-PI
We will be competing at the Tech Valley Regional Competition in Troy, NY on the weekend of March 7-9, and at the Finger Lakes Regional Competition at RIT on the weekend of March 14th-16th. The best day for local spectators is Saturday the 16th, though Friday the 15th will still hold its share of excitement. Please come out and support the team!

MS Community Building Circles
In 7th grade Family and Consumer Sciences classes Mrs. Kastner and Mrs. Powers have introduced community circles every Tuesday. These gatherings have turned into "Fishbowl Tuesdays" and students have developed social and emotional skills throughout the year. We have done team building exercises and advocated for community building which includes respect, trust, while also aligning with student engagement.

Raising Awareness... During Lunch
We have been fortunate to have Safe Harbor of the Finger Lakes come to talk with students about healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, toxic friendships, how to stay in safe relationships, and what to do if you have a friend in an unhealthy situation. Our students also had the opportunity to talk with a representative from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Ontario County where they will have an interactive demonstration on substance abuse and the impacts of substance use.
For PS I Love You Day, students and staff wore purple to remind every individual that they are loved, needed in this world, and absolutely amazing! Students wrote thank you notes to our amazing counseling staff during National School Counselors Week to thank Ms. Steenburgh, Mrs. Kastner, and Mr. Murphy for all they do! As the school year continues, we hope to continue to provide more opportunities similar to these for our students.

Power of You
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is planning a couple of different events at this spring. First, students are planning the re-scheduled American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, March 4th from 9 am-2:30 pm in the High School Gym. Students 16-years or older are welcome to donate. Sign ups will happen during lunch time on February 25 and 26. See Mrs. Betrus if there are any questions.
In addition to the blood drive, NHS is also planning a spring event for senior citizens/grandparents & their NCS grandchildren. This event is in collaboration with the Senior High Student Council. In the past, NHS & Student Council have hosted the Senior Citizen Prom. This year there will be a few changes to the format of this event to include more students and their grandparents. There will still be dinner and dancing for attendees. The event will take place on Friday, March 29th from 5:30-7:30 pm in the HS Cafe. More details to come about this event.
Finally, National Honor Society has begun the selection process for this year's Induction Ceremony. Eligible juniors and seniors received a letter and candidate form based on their cumulative GPA. These students have until Tuesday, March 5th at 3:25 pm to complete the form and return it to Mrs. Betrus. The faculty council will meet to make selection decisions in mid-late March. The NHS Induction Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 2nd at 7 pm in the HS Auditorium. NOTE: NEW DATE FOR CEREMONY.

What’s New For the Naples Chorus?
So far this has been a fantastic year for the Naples Chorus. Be it singing holiday carols for pre-K students or the retired residence at Quail Summit, hosting the November Faculty Showcase, or just our daily rehearsals… there is never a dull moment in our Naples music rooms!
To continue our mission to inspire and challenge our young singers, on March 8th Naples will be hosting The University of Rochester’s all female acapella group “Vocal Point”. This award winning group is excited to stop in Naples as part of their “50th Anniversary Tour” to perform for both our elementary and high school students. The group will also be leading a masterclass for our secondary choirs where students will no only learn from the group, but will actually get to sing with them. After last year’s Yellow Jackets were such a hit, we could not be more excited to bring exceptional acapella performers back to Naples this year!
The Naples Chorus is also looking forward to the weekend of April 5-7th as many of our students will be going to New York City. While there, students will get to perform at the Statue of Liberty, tour NBC studios, visit the Museum of Natural History, and Ellis Island, and eat in the city’s most iconic restaurants. Thanks to the help of arts in education and the Naples Rotary, our students will also get to see the Broadway show “The Phantom of the Opera”. Now in it’s 30th glorious season, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece is the winner of over 70 major theater awards, and has been seen by over 140 million people worldwide. We could not be more thrilled provide this artistic and culturally enriching experience for our students.
Thank you all for your consistent and continued support of music and the arts in Naples. We hope to see you all at our upcoming “Music In Our Schools Month” concert on March 26th!

Attention Class of 2020 and Families:
This time of year is very critical for juniors as they plan for their final year of high school and beyond. I will begin to meet with juniors individually to finalize senior year schedule requests and to discuss post-graduate plans. Below I have outlined some upcoming events:
Junior Parent College Night:
Junior Parent College Information Night will be held on March 14, at 6:30 PM in the Library Conference Room. I will introduce you to the college application process, SAT/ACT information, financial aid, and tools you can use in your child’s college search.
Scheduling for Senior Year:
I have enclosed a directory of courses for the 2019-2020 school year for you to review with your child. Complete descriptions of the courses can be found in the course directory, which you can now view on the Career and Counseling page of the school’s web-site (www.naples.k12.ny.us).
Junior Class Field Trip/College Fair:
Permission slips will be sent home for our annual trip to the National College Fair at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Monday, March 18. Representatives from over 200 colleges will be on-hand to give information on admission procedures, paying for college, testing, majors, and student life. The event is open to the public on Sunday, March 17, from 1:00-3:00. More information is available at www.nacacnet.org.
Canandaigua Academy has also invited families from Naples to their College Night on April 4, from 6:00-8:00. There will be a college fair with 20-30 colleges represented and an informaton session for families.
SAT & ACT Information:
College-bound juniors should plan on taking the SAT and/or the ACT this spring. I encourage students to take each assessment, as colleges will take your best score from either test. I also encourage students to try to increase their scores by retaking the tests in the fall. Test dates and registration information can be found online for the SAT at www.sat.org, and for the ACT at www.actstudent.org. We will be giving the SAT on March 27, for students who have already registered for this date through the Guidance Office. Students should take advantage of the free, personalized, SAT prep (link with your PSAT score) at www.khanacademy.org.
I hope to see all of you on March 14. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this process or to set-up an appointment
7th - 9th Updates from the Counseling Department:
- Scheduling:
- 9th Grade: Students will meet to edit their 4-year plan with Mr. Murphy, Naples HS Grade 10-12 Counselor, in the coming months. Students will be given the option to get a copy to bring home for parental review.
- 8th Grade: Parents of 8th graders were mailed a packet home regarding 4-year planning meetings. Please read the enclosed course catalog with your child. Have them circle courses that sound interesting on the separate Course Directory sheet, indicate whether you want to schedule a joint appointment or have me meet with your child alone, and send in the form. Please also email MKastner@NaplesCSD.org and JMiller@NaplesCSD.org to set-up a time ASAP if you would like a parent meeting to get on the calendar.
- 7th Grade: I will meet with students in late Spring to have them select whether they want Band, Chorus, Art, and/or Music. Students who did not take Art or some form of a Music class in 7th grade must take them in 8th.
- Career and College Exploration:
- 8th Grade: Students in the 8th Grade participated in a field trip to the Career and Technical Education Center recently to explore 2 careers in a variety of hands-on fields. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center in 10th grade if at that time they believe that they wish to pursue a Career and Technical field as a job after they leave high school.
- 7th Grade: Students will get an opportunity to note whether they want to participate in a small field trip to the Career and Technical Center for the Annual Middle School Skills Competition if selected. Twenty-two students maximum, of the students who express an interest to attend, will be able to visit at this opportunity but all students will visit programming in 8th grade. This trip will take place on Friday, March 8th.
From the Desk of Heather Clark
Dear Parents & Guardians,
As a parent of two teenagers myself, I am always looking for better ways to raise my children. Recently, I found a article from the Child Mind Institute called, “Tips for Communicating With Your Teen: Keeping the parent-child relationship strong during a tricky age” by Rachel Ehmke. Teenagers naturally want to be independent and test our boundaries as they grow and develop.
This article explain 9 tips for parenting through what some call the “terrible teen years.” These tips include: listen, validate their feelings, show trust, don’t be a dictator, give praise, control your emotions, do things together, share regular meals, and be observant. Although at a quick glance these tips may seem obvious, the simple suggestions described in the article remind parents that maintaining a strong relationship with your teenager is essential.
For more information, here is the link to the PACER website: https://childmind.org/article/tips-communicating-with-teen/
Sincerely,
Heather Kay Clark
Jr/Sr High Assistant Principal/
Naples District Data Coordinator
From the Health Office
High School Nurse’s Office
A current physical, within the last 12 months, is required for all new students, those joining a Spring sport, and those wanting a work permit.
Workfit Medical will be offering physicals on Tuesday, February 26 in the Nurse’s Office. Please email me, lfinnan2@naplescsd.org or call 374-7914 to reserve a spot.
If you choose to have a physical by your primary care physician, a copy of the exam must be given to the school nurse.
Reminder ….
If your child is absent due to an illness, I would like to remind parents/guardians that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends children stay home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours . This includes no fever without the use of fever-control medicines, free from vomiting, and free from diarrhea.
Please encourage your children to wash their hands often, cover their coughs and sneezes, and refrain from sharing water bottles and food while at school. These simple steps can help prevent the spread of germs.
