The Drive to Serve
A few weeks ago I experienced a moment very similar to this. Nothing fires me up more than poor customer service. As I was fuming to Rebecca and promising never to have my oil changed at Steve Jones Chrysler ever again; I began to think about the cause for poor service.
Most of my bad experiences were the result of someone who was uninterested in providing service….They Lacked Drive.
That got me to pursue a book by Daniel Pink, titled Drive. Drive looks at the 3 areas of motivation in life. Nature, Extrinsic, and Intrinsic motivation all impact why and how we perform. The book focused on why the “Carrot and Stick” are not lasting ways to build drive, yet we live and a carrot and stick society.
One recurring theme kept coming back in the book; people who love what they do and focus on why they do it, do not need someone to drive them. I am so fortunate to work with so many people who care about kids and clearly love their work.
With that said, I have one challenge you all. Start thinking about Why you do what you do. Once you write that answer write it down and read over it especially on the “rough” days. It will help you maintain your Drive.
