Mini Maples Preschool at Lincoln...They are PYP too!
The Mini Maples Preschool is partnered with the YMCA, Adrian College, and Adrian Public Schools. Their unit in the last few weeks was based on the theme of Who We Are. They discussed what friends are, how we treat friends , and what is considered to be a good friend. Having good manners was also a highlight within the classroom setting.
Activities were also planned to explore how babies change and how they have grown since they were an infant. Discussions also took place on what they would like to be when they grow up. Since change was the highlighted concept, the students also explored how the seasons change. The weather changes were connected to the clothing that people wear in different times of the year. Creative Curriculum is used in both the Mini Maples preschool rooms at Lincoln and also at the Alexander site.
The Learner Profiles and PYP attitudes are also highlighted and used in the preschool. The preschoolers were inquirers when thinking about their past and futures. Students were knowledgeable when the preschoolers shared about themselves and what it means to be a good friend. Being balanced in the preschool means you help each other, you must follow rules and try to make good choices. Students worked on cooperation and tolerance when working together and using words to communicate, but also focused being independent while working alone.
Throughout this unit, students worked on their skills within science, language arts, social studies and art. Students were writing lists about how to be a good friend and connecting it to how people get to know each other throughout the world in social studies. Science and art were also used when looking at changes in seasons and making collages of their findings. Even at the age of 3, these Mini Maples are using all subject areas to research WHO THEY ARE!
