Principal's Message
Read Across America was a blast! The school had so much fun celebrating the joys of reading. We loved all of our celebrity readers; it would be impossible to name them all. I have included a few pictures below. If you do not follow our Facebook page you can click on the link below. We try to post pictures of all of our exciting events, activities, lessons, and learning as often as possible.
Remember, Daylight Savings Time starts Sunday, March 10. It is time to spring forward.
This week, we will have Spring Pictures on Thursday, March 14. Students will take individual and class pictures. Bring your smiles : ) Report cards go home Friday, March 15. I know these will also bring smiles : )
Yearbook orders are due March 29. Order forms were sent home in February. If you need another order form you may contact your teacher, or get one from the front office.
Finally, I wish everyone a happy and safe Spring Break.
Sincerely,
Luke Bergeson
Principal

Alabama $1 Million Schools
Top 50 in the State!
The AL State Dept of Education determined the top 50 schools to receive a $20,000 grant by measuring the percentage of third grade students that met their Scantron reading growth targets in the 2017-18 school year (fall to spring). All Alabama public schools with a third grade, of which there are approximately 1,071, were included. Chestnut Grove Elementary is one of the two Decatur-area schools to receive this recognition!
Chestnut Grove Elementary in the News!
Beginning of the School Day
Students are permitted to enter the building at 7:15 a.m. to go to the cafeteria. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 7:30-7:45. Students will be allowed to report to their classrooms at 7:30 a.m. Students who arrive to school prior to 7:15 a.m. will not have adult supervision. School starts at 7:45 each day. Students should be seated and ready to learn in their classrooms at 7:45 a.m.
Arrival and Dismissal
Students should be dropped off in front of the school, not the rear.
For their safety, students should exit vehicles from the passenger side and not the driver’s side.
Please do not drop students off in the front parking spots. This, too, may jeopardize the safety of our students.
Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First grade students will be picked up in the front of the school in the parking lot closest to the playground and will be dismissed at 2:40. Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders will be picked up in the parking lot closest to the track and will be dismissed at 2:40. If you have children in different grades or you carpool, they will be picked up in the car line designated by the youngest child’s grade.
As you go through the car line, the codes for all children you are picking up should be displayed on the front dash or visor on the passenger side. Teachers will be walking down the car line calling in the codes. Inside, your child/children will be called and brought to the car line to wait for you at the designated area.
Drivers without the card(s) will be asked to move out of the car line, park in the parking lot, and come to the office to check out the student(s) at the end of dismissal.
Car dismissal will begin at 2:40. Walkers will be dismissed at 2:35. Students should not walk to meet parents in vehicles to avoid the car line. Early check-out for students needs to be done by 2:20 p.m. Please note that teachers are officially off duty at 3:00 p.m. Please make arrangements to pick up your child each day. Extended day services are available at Chestnut Grove
