Hour of Code
Collaboration. Communication. Creative problem-solving. Critical thinking. These four skills, known in some education circles as the 4Cs, are the skills necessary for the future and are the hallmarks of innovators. They are also skills utilized by coders. As Woodin looks toward the 2019 Hour of Code during the weeks of December 9-20, we're excited to engage our students in various Hour of Code activities as yet another example of how Northshore encourages innovation.
This year, our school is excited to once again participate in the Hour of Code. When students engage in coding activities during the week of December 9, they are immediately curious about how a line of code causes a computer, bot, or robot to respond. This curiosity motivates them to use creative problem-solving and critical thinking to think through the required logic related to a coding situation. Coding inherently involves trial and error, and students naturally begin to share their successes with others. Communicating about coding efforts with peers is the way students share what they learn and support one another as they work on coding projects.
Some awesome news about this year's Hour of Code relates to how the Northshore Schools Foundation is supporting this district-wide endeavor. Northshore Schools Foundation is:
- Providing Hour of Code bracelets with the messages, "I am a collaborator," "I am a communicator," "I am a critical thinker," and "I am creative" to each of our students that participate in Hour of Code activities.
- Providing Certificates of Participation to each of our students that participate in Hour of Code activities.
- Providing a coding board game set to any elementary school with 100% student participation. We’re excited to earn ours!
Woodin’s Hour of Code activities will be scheduled Dec. 9th- 20th during their class library time. Mrs. Chmiel and Mrs. Haight are partnering in this exciting activity. If you are interested in learning more about this exciting computer science curriculum, I would encourage you to visit Code.org and have your child show you what they are learning!
Specialist's Corner
Library: Over the past several weeks, we have continued to preview and/or read the Washington state nominees. Primary classes have read and rated 5 Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book nominees, 3rd graders are almost finished previewing the Otter nominees, and 4th and 5th graders are continuing to work their way through the Sasquatch nominees.
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming!! This year our fair will be held December 9-13 and upon our return from Thanksgiving break, we will be building excitement for the fair by previewing some of the books that will be available. Be on the lookout for a flyer that will come home that week which will give a schedule of open shopping times as well as book highlights! We need MANY volunteers so please look for the Sign Up Genius if you would like to be involved! Thank you!!! We are anticipating a GREAT fair this year!
PE: Our throwing units have been a lot of fun. We used age appropriate throwing activities to develop proper underhand and overhand throwing skills. Kindergarten learns correct arm motion, 1st and 2nd grade learn proper footwork, and intermediate grades work on weight transfer and body rotation. As we move into December we will continue to refine these skills.
Students in 4th and 5th grades have been wearing our nifty new heart rate sensors during lessons for the past few weeks. We can program each session so that it matches the anticipated number of minutes students should hit in various targeted heart rate zones. We use our TV and an iPad to allow students to view their real time data. This data will be viewable by families soon via their child’s Welnet account.
Music: Our Wildcat musicians did a fabulous job presenting songs of appreciation to our Veteran guests during our Veterans Day assembly! In music, we have been enjoying autumn and Thanksgiving themed songs and games. In addition, primary grade levels have been working on reading, writing, and playing music rhythm patterns, and intermediate grade levels have been reviewing and working on music concepts such as dynamics and treble clef note names. We are excited that this year in grades 3-5, students will be participating in a Ukulele unit. Ukuleles were granted to us generously through the Northshore Schools Foundation.
Save the Dates! Our grade level music performances are scheduled for the following evenings:
Choir Concert: Tuesday, January 28
1st and 2nd Grade Concert: Tuesday, March 31
Kindergarten Concert: Tuesday, May 12
3rd and 4th Grade Concert: Tuesday, May 19
5th Grade Concert: Tuesday, June 9
More information regarding times and location will be available closer to each performance date.
