February: Short Month...Short(ish) Newsletter
News
The library will be closed on Tuesday, March 5th due to 8th grade NAEP testing. And...I am taking Hannah to her first-ever librarians' conference (it is as exciting as it sounds) on Thursday and Friday, the 7th and 8th, so the library will be closed on those days as well. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that students will take advantage of their time on Monday and Wednesday to take care of library business they may have.
NOTE: Please do not send students down during these days for copying, printing, small group work, or borrowing as the library will be empty and students will be unsupervised.

We checked out nearly 500 titles in three weeks!

Breakout EDU Fever
This activity, which helped students practice the 4 Cs, was the kick-off to the 8th grade Community Project. Students chose groups of 2-3 and spent Monday, February 2nd brainstorming ideas for their projects. We can't wait to see what they all do for their projects!
We continued with our momentum and hosted Breakout events with 6th and 7th grade Making it Work/Language classes throughout the rest of the month. Kids are LOVING the hands-on nature of the challenges and so far, each group has had 100% Breakout success (with a few hints, of course). The group with the fastest breakout time on the Let It Snow Challenge was from Mrs. Jordan-Footeś 7th grade Spanish class. In second place was a group from Mrs. Kimisterś 6th grade MIW class. Mrs. Herrmannś Innovation Labs came down on Valentineś Day to complete the Cupid Catastrophe Challenge.
In Spirit News: A student from the 8th grade enjoyed the activity so much that she asked Coach Smart if her spirit team could do a Breakout team building challenge in order to earn their uniforms. They completed the Back to Cheer Boogie Challenge and celebrated their successes as a team!
Finally, Ms. Lund facilitated a digital breakout about digital citizenship with her MIW group and had great success!
7th Grade Social Studies Research Using BOOKS and online resources
Ethical Image Use in the Classroom
Read the article for yourself here: ¨Teaching Students to Legally Use Images Online¨
The Library of Congress also has a great deal of resources for reinforcing the importance of adhering to copyright laws. This may make useful information to be taught in Making It Work classes.
Taking the Mystery Out of Copyright
To further support our mission to teach, practice, and master ethical use of information, Tammy and I have created an original Breakout EDU experience for students (Plagiarism Police: License to Research). We will be in 7th grade right after vacation and would love to get into 6th and 8th grade classrooms with this important lesson. Let us know if you are interested in having us come into your classes with this Breakout EDU activity.
