Welcome Mr. Legg - Student Teacher Physical Education
Each year, Goodnoe Elementary School hosts several student teachers in the fall or spring. These students are provided a wonderful opportunity for learning, and the staff and I typically provide information about these individuals to families so that they are aware of those who are working with their children.
This spring, there will be a student teacher working with Mrs. McGill in her Physical Education classes. His name is Mr. John Legg, and he'll be starting his experience in the next few weeks. Mr. Legg provided a brief introductory letter for families, and you can access it at the button below.
CR ED WEEK
The staff at Goodnoe Elementary School and I invite parents to join us in observing CR Education Week – from January 17th through January 20th.
The following is the CR Education Week schedule for the week of January 16th, 2023:
- Monday, January 16, 2023: No School
All visitors must complete the form below in order to pre-register for the dates and times you will be visiting Goodnoe Elementary School. Providing this information to the school team is very helpful. It will assist in the teachers' planning and allow the office staff to have a visitor's badge ready for you (if you have your information in our Raptor system). Upon arrival at the school, you will be required to check in and retrieve a visitor's badge. If you have never received a visitor's badge in the past, please be sure to bring your driver's license with you.
In order to maintain the learning process for each child and our daily school procedures, we request that visitors observe the following guidelines:
- Visitors may only visit the class in which their child is a student. They are not permitted to visit other areas within the building during their visit.
- Each classroom will have chairs for you to sit and observe the teaching/learning process.
- Unless invited by a teacher to participate in what the class is doing, please limit your visit to observing the process.
- Kindly mute cell phones and refrain from all cell phone usage including picture/video taking. This will minimize distractions to instruction as well as comply with parent requests that their child’s photograph not be taken.
- Preschool children should not be brought to school during a classroom observation. Please make arrangements to leave preschool children with a sitter. They’ll soon get their chance to visit regularly!
- Remember, this is a time to observe the educational process, not to discuss your child’s performance with the teacher. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress, please make an appointment for a conference.
- Due to supervision concerns, parents may not attend lunch or recess periods.
We look forward to sharing this week with you!
Human Growth and Development: Grades 4-6
As part of the yearly health curriculum, students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades receive instruction on human growth and development during the second semester of the 2022-2023 school year. Classes will be taught by the Physical Education teacher; Ms. Potash or Mrs. McGill. The school nurse will be available for any follow-up questions. We understand that these can be difficult conversations to have with your children, but they are of great importance to our children’s health.
Additional resources for parents are provided in the attached letter under the grade level topics if you are looking to further these conversations at home. Please click on the button below to review this letter
Helping kids learn to resolve conflict
It is important for children to learn how to resolve conflicts on their own. :You can model positive ways to handle conflict at home. Here are some ideas to help your child manage conflict.
- STOP. Don’t let things get out of control. Take a step back and calm down since anger will make a conflict more difficult to resolve.
- SAY what the conflict is about. Make sure you both understand what is causing the disagreement and state what each of you want or doesn’t want as the outcome.
- THINK of positive options. Try to find a fair solution that meets both of your needs and provides a win-win solution.
- CHOOSE a positive solution that everyone will agree on.
- RESPECT the opinions of others, even if you can’t agree. Try to see each other’s perspective of the situation.
Activities to help practice conflict resolution
Family and peer activities can help children learn to handle conflict in a controlled way. Some activities that help children understand how empathy and communication work in conflict prevention and resolution as well as emotional resilience include:
-Play games. Games have rules, which can start disputes. Being able to work through a “questionable call” and not getting emotional is the foundation of conflict resolution.
-Create something. A writing or art exercise which involves a problem and solution can encourage kids to share how they resolve conflicts and learn how others do it as well.
Role play. Children can practice acting out how to resolve problems.
So Many Genres, So Little Time!
Genre of the month, Historical Fiction. It includes stories that are written to portray a time period or convey information about a specific time period or an historical event. Usually the event or time period is about 30 years in the past.
Notes from the Music Room
The sweet “Sound of Music” has been filling the hallways outside the music room as the students are practicing their scales using “Do-Re-Mi.” Here is the link for you to practice DO RE MI at home… it’s easy as 1-2-3. We love singing about peace and harmony in music class. Here are some fun songs to sing in honor of MLK to celebrate PEACE.
Math Enrichment News from Mrs. Gudusky, GES Math Specialist:
Recently, the 6th-grade math enrichment students studied Piet Mondrian's art in class. Then, using primary colors, students coded their own Mondrian-style masterpieces of geometric shapes using intersecting lines at right angles. The 6th-grade students used the Artist section of code.org to code their art (see picture below).
Project below by: Z.H. Z wrote 367 lines of code for this project!
SAVE THE DATE! Willy Wonka, Jr.
We are proud to announce that this year's school play is Willy Wonka Jr. Our cast members are hard at work preparing a scrumdiddlyumtious performance! Mark your calendars for a 5pm show on March 28th and a 7pm show on March 29th.

Sixth Grade - T.E.A.M. (formerly DARE) instruction
In conjunction with the Newtown Police Department, sixth graders will begin TEAM instruction the week of January 17th. The Teaching, Educating, And Mentoring (T.E.A.M.) School Liaison Program is a school-based “law related” education program taught by specifically trained law enforcement officers. T.E.A.M. is a proactive effort to make schools and communities safer, promote responsible citizenship, and encourage positive character traits. The T.E.A.M. School Liaison Program’s goal is to unite educators, students, and law enforcement to play an integral part in promoting awareness regarding topics such as laws, consequences, drugs, social media and bullying. The philosophy is that while working together as a team we can create relationships and be united in protecting children. Each lesson is approximately 45-60 minutes in length and will be instructed in a consecutive sequence (one time per week for 8 weeks).

DOGS/PETS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
When escorting students to and from school, please do not bring pets on school grounds or into the school building. Many of our children have pet allergies or are afraid of animals; therefore, the presence of animals in school or on school grounds is prohibited. Some classes at Goodnoe Elementary School do participate in the Nor’Wester Reading Dogs program, so on occasion you may see dogs visiting. These dogs are specially trained and licensed to work in the schools with students. No other animals are permitted on school property during school hours. Please refer to our board policy for more information on animals in school policy 718 https://go.boarddocs.com/pa/coun/Board.nsf/vpublic?open#
SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
During the past few weeks, your child’s class has been reviewing the SW-PBIS (School Wide- Positive Behavior Interventions & Support) school expectations. The lessons included a class discussion, modeling and practicing of respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in the locations listed on the school-wide matrix. Your child’s class also learned about the voice levels that are expected for the different locations. Please take some time to review the matrix and voice level chart with your child. Our school website has a SW-PBIS link with more specific information regarding the structure of Goodnoe’s School Wide Positive Interventions & Support system. Check out more information at the links below.
