What's The Scoop In Canon-Mac?
What we've been up to in March 2023
Canon-McMillan's Elementary Buildings Celebrated the Importance of Reading with "Read Across America Week"!
Each building had different things planned to celebrate "Read Across America Week" that occurred in early March. "Read Across America Week" is celebrated annually from March 2 to 6 . The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. Wylandville Elementary, for example, celebrated "Read Across America Week" with some fun theme days and a free "Book Shop." On Monday, Wylandville students wore hats for the theme "hats off to great authors." On Monday at South Central Elementary students dressed in their favorite outfit. The theme was "Marvelous Me Monday" and was all about loving themselves. On Tuesday, South Central Elementary students wore their favorite sports outfit. The theme was "Team Up Tuesday" and they highlighted team work and perseverance. There were different themes like this each day for every builiding, even though only Hills-Hendersonville Elementary and Wylandville Elementary are pictured below.
Many classrooms at Wylandville Elementary had guest readers including parents, grandparents, and community leaders including our North Strabane Fire Fighters and the Emergency Management Coordinator from North Strabane Township (pictured below).
Hills-Hendersonville Elementary students celebrated "Read Across America" with a theme week celebrating the Nation's largest celebration of reading. Students dressed up as who they wanted to be when they grow up, support their favorite team, wear your favorite outfit, and we closed out the week with a pajama day. On Wednesday night, over 50 students and staff logged onto to Zoom in their pajamas to hear Mrs. Cummings, Hills-Hendersonville Reading Specialist read two bedtime stories, Oliver Who Would Not Sleep! and Dogs on the Bed. Students were excited to see their classmates and teachers and roll out of bed to come to school in their pajamas on Thursday. What a great week celebrating "Read Across America"!

Canon-McMillan's Class of 2023 Presented Senior Projects
On Friday, March 3, the Class of 2023 presented their Graduation Projects. Every career from art therapist, bioengineer, and cosmetologist to ultrasound technician, veterinarian, and welder was represented by the seniors. The project required a Google Slides presentation, but many students included creative additions such as interactive components, live demonstrations, or self-made videos. The forty pairs of evaluators participating in this process may have taken a psychological inkblot test, tried some physical therapy stretches, or even sampled a specialty pastry. Always a favorite, visiting animals included a goat, gecko, and several dogs. The atmosphere at the high school was a combination of nervousness, excitement, relief, celebration, and pride.
As a new initiative, standout presenters were nominated for achievement awards. The winners received a custom 2023 memento and were entered into a gift card raffle. Additionally, behind the scenes, the Santa Fund’s Dress for Success program provided professional attire and organized a personal care product drive to help all high school students look and feel their best. Many people and organizations are involved in making this milestone day for the seniors successful. Instrumental in implementing the project, the twelfth grade English teachers, librarian, and technological advisor are Mr. Matt Heirendt, Mrs. Kim Hyland, Mrs. Tera Lauderbaugh, Miss Melissa Moore, Mr. Rob Montini (technology), Mrs. Julie Shuman (librarian), and Mr. Scott Weiss. Student Council, sponsored by Miss Jordan Miles; the Senior Class, sponsored by Mrs. Natalie Montini; and the Santa Fund, sponsored by Mrs. Chelsea Geist, also collaborated with the Graduation Project. This event would not be possible without the collaborative effort of the high school administration, faculty, and support staff.
