Approval of the New Kn-5th Grade ELAR TEKS
At their June 12th meeting, the State Board of Education (SBOE) took action to approve only minor changes to the Kn-5th grade reading/language arts TEKS. An archived broadcast of the proceedings can be found at the following link:
http://www.adminmonitor.com/tx/tea/
Proposed changes (such as adding personal narrative TEKS back into the requirements) were discussed. However, after consideration, the SBOE declined any significant changes to the TEKS. Although we are told that only minor tweaks were made to the document, the final document still has not been posted on the TEA Website pending several final steps of the approval process. However, it is safe to say that the TEKS that are currently posted on the TEA Website (and the ones in the Shared Resources Folder for those who attended New ELAR TEKS Training for Kn-2nd at ESC6) are valid and ready to be implemented during the 2019-2020 School year.

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM (NSLP)
National School Lunch Program Guidance from the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA):
For School Year 2019-2020, USDA has approved the continuation of free eligibility for students enrolled in state-funded pre-K programs. All students participating/enrolled in a state-funded early childhood or pre-K program are categorically eligible for free meals. When a list of student names is provided by the appropriate district or charter school official, the students are coded as directly certified on the contracting entities (CE’s) roster and in the CE’s point of service (POS) system. The roster and POS system must identify the categorical program participation for these students.
Please note, TDA is aware that TEA codes pre-K students in different ways for educational purposes, such as enrolled, enrolled in membership, or in attendance. These differences in coding do not impact the free eligibility of state-funded pre-K students—even if the state does not cover the full cost of the student’s pre-K instruction—all state-funded pre-K students are treated the same for the school meal programs. To ensure that the CE records accurate information for PEIMS, please contact the Regional Education Service Center PEIMS specialist in your region or TEA.
